Rules for the Classifieds & Forums

These rules are meant:

- to help the classifieds and forums operate smoothly
- to promote a friendly atmosphere for users.

We appreciate that most users:

- are courteous
- sometimes even go out of their way to be helpful
- generally follow these rules on their own.

However, the formal posting of these rules is meant to also help clarify certain issues (especially regarding business advertising) and to provide an understanding of why certain posts may be modified, moved, and/or deleted.

Terms and Conditions

If you violate the rules below, you may be immediately and permanently banned, and in cases of excessive and/or flagrant violation, your service provider may be informed of your posts. The IP address of all posts is recorded to help enforce these rules.

By using this site, you agree that and/or its moderators may modify, move, and/or delete any post at their sole discretion.

We reserve the right to modify these rules from time to time as deemed necessary.

Messages (whether in the forums OR private messages [PMs]) must not contain:

- Threats.
- Harassment.
- Negative comments about other people (except in the User Ratings section).
- Derogatory comments about businesses or other organizations.
- Profanity.
- Discriminatory / racist / sexist remarks.

- Ads selling animals. (This rule is the same as what you'll find at ebay and many other sites. Otherwise, there would be a problematic incentive for people to excessively breed animals.)
-- But if you clearly state that the animal is for free, then it's okay.

- Ads for pirated software or content; illegally modded gamesystems (e.g. xboxes, etc.); weapons/guns/ammo; alcohol/drugs/prescription items.

- Ads for materials which you know (or have reasonable cause to believe) are stolen and/or illegal.

- Commercial-type advertising (whether you are a business or not), unless you've paid the appropriate fees to do so -- more info below.

- Links to competing web sites or sites in a similar marketspace. This includes (but is not limited to): other web services companies, forums, classifieds sites, etc. Please keep in mind that you get to use this site for free, and a lot of time & money has been put into developing it -- and like any business, we cannot allow competitors & others to simply gain free advertising off our work (especially when we've been generous in providing so much for free, while other cities lack similar sites because it's not cost-effective).

If you're unsure if a post you wish to make may violate a rule, please ask first.

1) The "golden rule" is golden: Please treat others how you would wish to be treated.

2) Please use common sense and good general judgement.

In particular, kids may surf onto the site, so please keep that in mind when posting.

3) In general, would you be comfortable if your family/friends/kids knew what you were posting? If not, you likely shouldn't post it.
(Some issues are simply sensitive by their nature, but this is mainly aimed at vulgar language, rude behaviour, etc.)

1) Please post in the appropriate forum.

General discussions don't belong in the Classifieds forums because: (1) they make it difficult to see true classified ads, and (2) they don't foster discussion, because the topic won't last very long on the first page of the classifieds forums.

If you post in an inappropriate forum, the topic may be moved, or possibly even simply deleted (especially if you repeatedly post incorrectly).

2) Don't make mean-spirited insults about people, and don't make derogatory comments about any business or other organization.

Such messages are deleted, and if you do make such comments about others, you risk being banned. In the case of individuals, if it's obvious that it's just good-natured joking around with other forum users, then that's acceptable (but it has to be obvious -- otherwise, you risk being banned).

Why? Because the anonymous nature of the Internet makes it too easy for people with a bias to make false allegations. We've even had cases in which a local business appears to have been pretending to be "anonymous" users and making false claims against their competitors (its IP address, however, made it less-than-anonymous).

3) Only non-commercial ads by individuals and not-for-profit organizations are allowed to be posted for free. Free advertisements for commercial purposes are not allowed (whether you are a business or not) -- such ads must be purchased. Ads offering services are also considered commercial for the purposes of this web site (since there is no real limit to the amount that could be provided).

Site operations involve costs, and paid advertising therefore helps support the site. Please click here to learn more about purchasing advertising.

If it's obvious from your post that it is advertising a business, it will be deleted. The same is true for commercial type ads by individuals, even if they are not a business.

Why? As a rule-of-thumb, if a venture has gone to the extent of operating as a business, then it should be able to afford to pay for advertising (since as a business, it can presumably recoup ad expenses with increased sales afterward. And as a business, it also has additional value in that the business can simply be sold.).

Similarly, if people are selling a very large amount/number of items, or are consistently selling items in a manner similar to a business, they are essentially acting like a business and it's only fair that they pay the same fees.

However, businesses *can* answer questions asked by users (but only if it is directly relevant). But please note: if it's discovered that a business has "asked a question" just so it can answer it (and thereby promote the business), then that business name may be permanently censored on this site.

4) PLEASE DON'T PUT EVERYTHING IN CAPITAL LETTERS :) On the Internet, it's considered shouting and generally viewed as rude.
