There is no such thing as the "regular flu". Influenza is a very serious virus that kills many people each year. H1N1 poses a very real and serious threat because the target group that is falling seriously ill are healthy young people and children. Obviously the elderly and anyone with a chronic illness is also at risk. I don't follow where you feel oasis is using fear tactics.

prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice
Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).
The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know
The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):
1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt)... *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected o ne. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.* Neti pots and sinus rinse kits are available at the drug store and relatively inexpensive….under $15.
5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.
I suggest you pass this on to your entire e-list. You never knowwho might pay attention to it - and STAY ALIVE because of it...

This Dr. practises medicine in a third world country where the flu vaccine probably is not readily available. It is important to know where your information is coming from. I am not downplaying the importance of proper hygiene, just pointing out why there would be no mention of the vaccine.

Every winter I would get pneumonia and then broncitus. Three years ago I starting getting the flu shot and since have never even had a cold in winter or summer, the flu, pneumonia or broncitus. So I'm all for it. The H1N1 vaccine for me is going to be based on exactly what my Dr. tells me when I go for my flu shot in 2 weeks. He knows my medical history so he is the best judge as to whether I need to get it. I cannot decide so I am leaving it in his hands to make the decision for me.

I can admit I'm not 100% comfortable with not taking it. My wife & I are still discussing it quite a bit. Thanks on the congrats & your concerns.

Did you know 10x as many people die from tobacco related illnesses per year compared to influenza???!!! Even more of us die from 2nd hand smoke compared to the flu. Yet we continue to make & sell smokes. I'm sure I can find a million things more likely to kill us "healthy young people & children" than H1N1. Obviousy - if we can better our odds the better. But like... tobacco, bisphenol a, lead, agent orange, (i can keep going)... - only time will tell if these injections are safe and some of us who do question the safety of what we put into our bodies (that do have immune systems BTW) deserve not to be scared into doing something we're unsure of. Do you have any idea how many companies, TV networks & individuals are profiting from this? The thought of that alone makes me sick!!!
I do agree that providing us with information is important but there is such thing as going overboard. Have they gone overboard? Good question... only time & the guinea pigs will tell.

Most of my information came from CNN, CBC, the cdn.gov. site and another one (I will post the link when I find it) with list of the ingredients and past side effects of them.
CBC news stated that it was tested on the 130 people 18-60 yrs, contained the adjuvent, mercury etc.
CNN actually had a dr that stated they would not give it to there children.
As did fox news( but I do not consider to be as credible)
As for it not being the regular flu....that is not rocket science or the flu shot would be sufficient.
It is also no secret that it has been fast tracked and not sufficiently tested.....its been a couple months.....generally vaccines take years (especially in Canada) before they are approved.

It was CBC news
And sorry it was not "untested" it was tested on 130 people aged 18-60. My children are 1,3 and 11.......so for them it is untested.

michelle -The polio vaccine was developed, and used right away. And the doc that invented it was considered a hero. I'm sure your children have had that vaccine.

LOL. Obviously it was well tested by the time my children got it.
I have no issue with vaccines ( my children have all theres) or the regular flu shot but will not be giving them the h1n1. If you feel a couple months and a hundred and some people (none of which are children) is enough testing go for it.

Ask any of your family physicians about it, they will put it like this, do you buckle up your child for safety before you go for a drive? Do not rely on information from media, go to the professionals you know! I do not know of 1 doctor at work that won't be getting it. Don't be selfish either, you may not get the flu, but you can be a carrier! Nothing like passing it on to someone else!

Don't be selfish?
So when you are sick with a head cold or the flu, etc, do you stay home from work until your "sick" is completely gone? Do you stay home from work with your sick children? Do you keep your children out of school/day care until they are completely better?
If your answer is yes, I am prepared for your reply.
Not everyone has two incomes in their homes. Nor does everyone have another income in their family that coveres everything you need money for. Nor does everyone work at family friendly places that allow you time off for sickness!
If that is your luxury, then count yourself lucky. Not everyone can stay home when they get the sniffles or worse!! If everyone did, there would be a whole lot of people looking to welfare, and then you b**** about that!!

I think it is a personal choice.
There hasn't been much time in it's testing to say what could happen in future years to those who took it.
Healthy and sick people have died from it.
They say it's not much different than the "regular" flu.
Doctors are giving it to their children.
etc, etc, etc, etc
There are so many rounf and round answers to this no one can make up their minds.
Again, I say it's a personal choice. And, as someone else said, talk to your doctor about it and then make your choice. (Though I won't talk to mine about it, she's a quack!! )
We all have our reasons!! This is still so new and not much is known yet, so it's not fair to put anyone down or to judge people for their choices in this matter!!! So many problems have come from other vaccines, you can't blame people for being cautious about what they are putting in their own bodies!!
No one comes on here and tells people to smoke because they do, now do they!!

Hahaha it's funny because you just know that some of the people who are saying it's selfish not to get the flu shot are the same who say smoking is a personal choice and you should have the freedom to do it where they want.

Why the "LOL" in front of this sentence? Perhaps you didn't understand what livkat had pointed out regarding the polio vaccine?
I think it's too bad so many people are relying on the media in order to make a decision regarding the vaccine. What does the media have to gain with all the hype? Why ratings of course!

Since when did schools and daycare become an infirmary for sick children? (and no, I'm not talking about the common cold) What gives a parent the right to knowingly place other children at risk by selfishly sending their sick children to school/daycare?
Parents need to rethink this "who cares" attitude and have a backup plan for their children.

http://www.vaccineresistancemovement.org/
This site has alot of reading but it is very informative. Click on the part that says top ten reason not to vaccinate your child. The thing that really jumps out at me is the chemicals in the end part of the article that show the side effects. Some of them cause Autism and cancer, and those are in the regular vaccinations too. No one can argue the fact that those two conditions are on the rise. I am not telling anyone what to do. I do believe it is a personal choice but no all the facts. Don't just do it because your dr tell you to. If you put something in your body be aware of the risks. And I do realize this is from an activist group that are against vaccinations but they do have actual articles to back up what they say and you can google each chemical and find out for yourself the side effects of each chemical if you don't want to rely on this alone.
