Can you use an expired passport to enter USA?

My friend is adamant that her expired passport will get her into Calais, saying her friend does it all the time, but all the websites I visit-travel sites, CBSA, etc say no. It could be that the border guard is just not really looking at the dates but we could get a stickler-type for a guard and I would not want to end up at the border and be turned away or have to leave her to cool her heels in St Stephen while I go to IGA and Mardens. I want to go TOMORROW, so it isn't as if she could get a passport or nexus card but I also don't want to be the killjoy and say no if it is possible.

I've gone to Calais with my mother-in-law (who has a passport), along with my sister-in-law (who does NOT have a passport), a couple of times this year, with no problem at all. My sister-in-law showed them her drivers licence.

Weird, I do not think that would have flown with the border guard we got, he demanded that my friend take off her sunglasses, asked us both where we worked and how we knew each other and if we had ever been to court recently even as witness or plaintiff, not just as the accused :-0 He also asked if we were picking up or leaving anything or anyone in the USA.... yeah, I'ma picking up my mail order husband at the hardware store PO box and leaving this bar of gold bullion for the Yakuza in exchange. (and yes, I know better than to joke with border services, but the thoughts do spring to mind)

A fellow I work with just went down to Maine with his kids school for a Basketball Tourny and he told me that you are allowed to cross the border with only a Drivers License...you just can't fly without a passport. He said many people who went only had a DL. Doesn't hurt to call and find out though.

U.S. border guards will only accept an enhanced driver's licence for ID at land border crossings. Enhanced licences are not available in New Brunswick.

The proper protocol does not really matter. It just depends on the agent working and what kind of mood their in. My mother and sister was in St. Stephen and decided to go ever but she realized she didn't have passport with her DL worked fine. They can make you produce valid passport by law.

I did read on one website that there are special rules for school trips, perhaps he slipped in under those conditions. This time they asked us for our passport on RE-ENTERING Canada, which i have never been asked for before. Both guards in US on the way in and Canada on the way out demanded that my cousin remove her sunglasses, which I thought was a bit weird since they were both really snappish about it, the American guy and the Canadian woman. It isn't as if they could be checking eye colour, since she could have been wearing coloured contacts. We also had to go inside and pay duty, a big $8 total, which is almost a waste of their time.
