gas prices being low or high can impact more than just what consumers pay for their gas.
consider the renewed efforts that most auto manufactures and Lithium-Ion battery manufactures have been putting towards hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles.
with the high fuel costs, many consumers have been taking fewer trips, carpooling and selecting more fuel efficient vehicles. this has created a higher demand and future for those new types of cars. if fuel prices hadn't gone up and people didn't react the way they did, the technology might never have been developed further.
of course, i'm very happy when fuel prices are lower so i can drive my gasoline powered car more often, but would love to be able to buy an electric car if it has a range of 450km or better and charging isn't so bothersome.
