Significant jump at the pumps
January 07, 2009 - 3:50 pm
By: Denise Barkhouse News 88.9 Staff

SAINT JOHN - If you're looking to save money this week, today might be the day to do it.

Fuel prices are on the way up.

A source to our newsroom suggests fuel prices will make a dramatic jump, with a litre of regular self serve rising by nearly 9 cents, diesel by over 9 and a half cents and home heating oil by 11 cents.

This when the energy and utilities board announces this week's regulated pricing at midnight.

Experts say gas prices have taken off in the last week for a number of reasons, including the fact that OPEC reduced oil production by 2.2 million barrels.

Other big reasons include mideast tensions and supply and demand.

I had heard something like that earlier today and called the oil company and ordered some furnace oil! It was delivered this afternoon! I love these low prices!! Furnace Oil$0.635/L

God this stuff really irks me! Why is it that when oil prices dropped it was several weeks until we noticed the difference at the pumps, but as soon as there is an increase it is passed onto the consumer. It really upsets me how the gas companies can gouge their customers over and over again, and now with the government's help; thanks to regulation. Crock of you know what if you ask me.

gas prices being low or high can impact more than just what consumers pay for their gas.

consider the renewed efforts that most auto manufactures and Lithium-Ion battery manufactures have been putting towards hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles.

with the high fuel costs, many consumers have been taking fewer trips, carpooling and selecting more fuel efficient vehicles. this has created a higher demand and future for those new types of cars. if fuel prices hadn't gone up and people didn't react the way they did, the technology might never have been developed further.

of course, i'm very happy when fuel prices are lower so i can drive my gasoline powered car more often, but would love to be able to buy an electric car if it has a range of 450km or better and charging isn't so bothersome.

Bob Jones gives you this info every tuesday night on the CBC suppertime tv news and wednesday morning at 725 in the morning on cbc radio. He's usually pretty accurate! Down 1 cent or so tomorrow he says. I'm pretty (VERY) sure this is where the other news outlets such as fraudgers gets their predictions.
