I find that the Reversing Falls Restaurant has both good food and service along with reasonable prices.
Lately the Mediteranean's quality (for mashed potatoes) has severely deteriorated (almost like "instant" mashed potatoes.)
If you like Pizza, you can't beat East Side Marios!

I guess it depends on what type of food you like and if you are interested in trying something new. Anyway, here's my picks: Hilton, The bistro on Prince William St., Sebastians (1/2 price apps on Thursdays, good value), Boilerworks (something for everyone), Churchill's.
I tend to stay away from the franchises'. If you are looking for the BEST pizza than Pomodori's wins hands down!

Pomidori Pizza (in Rothesay) placed 10th (I believe) in competition in Italy and 3rd in a Canadian competition. Best pizza ever. You should try it.

Hmmmm...... anytime I've been to Sebastian's I've had excellent food, excellent service and the place has been packed. It'd be too late to go there tonite anyway, they're normally booked up ahead of time.

Food is very relative. Very. I may like something, and you may not. It's very hard to tell someone that this place is great or that place is great.
We have to go by what the mass says I suppose.
I personally have been to Sebastian's and found the food to be below my standards. The food was overcooked, dry and tasted like it was in a freezer for months on end.
I've never returned.
Pomidori Pizza is great. Very fresh, all local and very tasty.
I use to frequent the Ale House, but I had a bad experience a little while back. I received food that was clearly overdone and cold. I asked for a replacement and got the classic HMPFFF response from their waiting staff supervisor. Upon the return of my food it was just microwaved.
Never returned.

kaj., you are correct, food is personal to an individuals taste. A newer restaurant will have growing pains, a more established restaurant may become too "commerical". I have found the smaller locally owned restaurants to offer better quality. But as you said it boils down to personal preference.

East Side Marios is one of the best right now I think, excellent service and food, decent pricing. We went to Vito's Rothesay Ave last night not good service at all and food wasn't hot, I think they are slipping a bit compared to what they used to be like. As for Churchills we went there last Friday night for our Anniversary and counted 7 MICE running around the floor and the waitress thought it was kind of neat. We won't be going back. Another customer who is a regular there said it is normal. I don't know why the Dept of Health hasn't checked on it.

You will not eat at a restaurant in Uptown SJ that does not have some mice here and there. Yes, it is normal, very normal. Did you count 7 all at once on the floor or did you see a mouse 7 times? I'd rather see a mouse here and there than never see one and then wonder what the hell they used to kill every one in the area - that to me, would be horribly gross knowing the chemicals used around food I want to eat.

why not try the Drake Steakhouse(formerly Vito's ) on Russell St.It's a family owned business
the food is fabulous and the offer a nice clean atmosphere( not loud or noisy and i never seen a mouse in there(if there are any the must get takeout..lol) Their food is made fresh and they have daily specials which are rarely the same
prices are good also
