How do I detect a bearing wall?

Hi,

We have a basement apartment I want to alter. I want to take out part of the wall between the living and the kitchen so it opens up more. But the kitchen of the top apartment is right above the one in the basement. How do I know for sure that if I take out the wall in the basement the whole thing won't collapse?
