Passport information....

If you've applied for your passport you will be permitted to enter the US at Calais for shopping with the numbered documents that you're given when you apply.

My husband & I drove drove yesterday and we were permitted in.

you can cross into the US at any of the border stations with just the numbers. I cross across at the Houlton border at least 2-3 times a week.

Can anyone tell me what you are aloud to spend on Goods (Duty Free) when you are just over for the day. I know that you can bring back groceries and they do not bother you on the amount, but how much are you able to spend on Goods? I believe it used to be $20.00 but I would hope now with the prices of things they might allow more. Does anyone know?

Calis

You can spend $ 50.00 on groceries and Misc togeather but they really want to know what you spent on Misc cause thats were they get you on duty.

So if you went to usa and bought a car part for 200.0 you pay duty on top of it which is about 60.00

I bout 75.00 in groceries and 20.00 in Misc and i was good togo no issues

I haven't been charged duty on anything there in ten years. I HAVE been charged HST (currently 13%). Groceries they usually don't care about, but there is a limit somewhere - check border services website.

This is from the website. I believe it is still only $20 for less than 24 hrs. It depends on who you get at the border if you are going to have to pay. I know that isn't how it should be but that's what happens. Even groceries they can be very frugal and make you pay duty if they want. Your children get an additional $20 too, so if you want to spend more and not pay duty bring your children

What are your personal exemptions?

After each absence of 24 hours or more

You can claim up to CAN$50 worth of goods without paying any duties. This is your personal exemption. You must have the goods with you when you arrive in Canada and you cannot include tobacco products or alcoholic beverages in this exemption. If the goods you bring in are worth more than CAN$50 in total, you cannot claim this exemption. Instead, you have to pay full duties on all goods you bring in.

After each absence of 48 hours or more

You can claim up to CAN$400 worth of goods without paying any duties. You must have the goods with you when you arrive in Canada. Although you can include some tobacco products and alcoholic beverages, a partial exemption may apply to cigarettes, tobacco products and manufactured tobacco. See the sections called “Alcoholic beverages” and “Tobacco products” for more details.

Ensure you have the necessary papers.
Identification papers such as a passport or birth certificate are recommended. Visit the US Customs and Border protection Agency web site for more information about identification requirements. You also may be asked to show a return air ticket or proof of sufficient funds. Know the rules and make sure your appearance is not cause for suspicion (probably not a good day to be wearing your "legalize marijuana" t-shirt!). Customs inspectors do have the power to ruin a vacation. If you come under strong scrutiny for any reason, answer questions directly and politely. Tempting though it may be, wise-cracking and rudeness will only be to your own detriment.

I thought this was both informative and funny!! I got a kick out of it anyway

Thanks Everyone for there reply's, I was hoping by now it might be more than $20. for goods as prices are high on items even in the US. I realize I can pay the duty but unless it's a real bargain and I haven't seen any of them yet I would rather not buy it. Sue

It's not duty that you're paying it's tax..and on some items it's worth it and others not so much.
You have to know the prices hereon what you're looking for.
