Having a Wisdom tooth removed... :(

I'm going to see a dentist tomorrow because my wisdom tooth has been bothering me-- my entire lower-left mouth hurts, and I suspect the tooth is pushing on the others. I'm quite sure the dentist will tell me that the tooth has to be removed.

Will dentists only recommend removing the tooth as an absolute LAST resort, or do they prefer to remove them regardless? I'm hoping that it won't have to come out-- but I think that's highly unlikely.

I'm really quite scared. From what I understand, there is only one dentist who removes wisdom teeth in SJ- is that correct? How bad is it, really? I've never even had a filling before, and I can't swallow pills, so I don't think painkillers will be an option.

Also, does having a tooth removed involve missing work?

I'm sure my dentist could answer these questions tomorrow, but I'm so nervous about it that I can hardly sleep tonite! Any advice would be much appreciated!

I believe that there is more that one doctor in SJ.. But not many more..
Please for God sakes dont go to A specific Dortor... Pm for details
I went to him..and i looked like Professor Klump.. Not to mention Unessary bruises on my chest and arms..
apparently he uses your body for leverage.. a friend actually awoke during the procedure.. and he was on her chest.. !!! I assume thats what happened to me. He is known as the "butcher".

A friend i work with just got his out.. and he didnt have a single bruise.. I can ask him who his Dr was..

Dont be scared tho.. Its not that bad.. Even tho i had the experience i had.. Its was quick recovery.. youll be fine

I think I know what doctor you are talking about and he does not have a good reputation but I went to him and never had a problem. I had all four out at the same time and the worst part was the first 4 hours afterwards. I had to take the next day off work, and found it easier to sleep sleeping up for a couple days. I wasnt as bad as everyone said it was going to be. Just make sure you dont sneeze. Good Luck

I went to the dr that does not have a good reputation and had all 4 out. NO problems. I barley had any swelling or bruising. I left his office and was sore and unable to eat(for obvious reasons) but was out and about the same day. Within a week I was back to normal.
My boyfriend on the other hand went to the hospital to have them out and he was swelled to about double his normal size and his whole face was bruised and had a horrible time.

I had mine out, two at a time when I was 17. In the chair with nothing more than freezing and no pain killers. Went to the dr for Tylenol 3. woke up during the night and took some more, too close to my last dose, got dizzy and broke my toe on the doorcasing.

My experience was the total opposite. I tried to get out of the chair and was not allowed. I had to lay there for 20min to make sure that I did not have any reaction to being asleep. The bruising is a person by person basis. It was sore but a lot less than I would have expected for having 4 teeth cut out of my mouth. After the fact everything healed fine.
I have heard good and bad about this dr. but I think that you will hear that about most dr's.

I think that if the tooth has actually came in then your dentist can pull it out?

My hubby had 2 taken out last year, he went to a dr uptown, and he had no problems, he was a little swollen, the dr put him out of work for 10 days, and all turned out just fine. No bruising at all.

I went to the same DR about 15 or 16 years ago, and again I had no problems at all.

Thats who I went to. The two people above you also and no problems. but this is the person that others are saying was horrible. I guess it is inevitable that some people could have a harder time than others.

It is likely because years ago he was sued for mal practice and now, even though he does a wonderful job and very likely learned from his mistake, people still attach this stigma to him and expect the worst.

Sued for malpractice, eh?

Anyway, my toothache mysteriously disappeared, so I ducked out of my appointment. Don't judge me!!
Seriously, the tooth is broken through and has been for months with no problems, so I assume it's fine and maybe I just bit something hard or whatnot to irritate it.

But thanks to everyone who was so honest with their experiences!

If you broke your tooth chances are it's rotting, and you will always have problems with it until it is pulled. This just happened to a friend, and when she finally gave into the pain and went to the dentist it was completely rotten and needed to be pulled.

Same as above for me, I went to that Dr everyone is talking about. Had all 4 taken out at once. They would not allow me to get up out of the chair for a while, when I did I went home and slept. I took the t3's but they just made me sick so I didn't take them after that. No swelling, no bruises and started a new job 3 days later. Just the stitches were annoying!
