A River Runs Through It...

The back of McAllister Mall is a lake...the water, at 9:30 this morning, was almost at the doors...a staff person told me that the water did come into the mall...they had to sweep, mop etc...
Part of Rothesay Avenue was closed and there are major lakes all over east Saint John.

Well that is swamp land. You can tell by the constant changing shape of the parking lots. Most of the east side is swamp land, or below sea level. I can't wait to see people blame the city for this one.

All the flooding around the mall is now reduced to the usual large puddles.

Agree!!! makes me wounder why they keep expanding over swamps. Some day in the years to come they will regret building malls and shops on a swamp. You may not see it, but the mall sinks a little bit each each year....

Building over swamps is not always a bad thing. The Dutch have been doing it successfully for years. The city has tried to do some work to some success but the impervious cover just keeps getting bigger and bigger and the upgrades are lagging far behind.

Before building on marshy, bogged areas they drive piles until they reach bedrock, than after they have been drove as far as the possibly can, they attach the concrete forms and the structure of these buildings to the piles. There is no possible way that it is sinking due to being on a marsh, the only way that it would move is if the bedrock was doing so, and the only way the bedrock would move is if there was an earthquake, or some other earth shattering event. Just so you know.

Building I worked at for 6 years on McAllister drive was built the way you described. It was shifting and sinking every year.

Just so you know.

check again, the building didn't move, the land around them sunk.
Just look at the kight poles etc and see how they appear raised, it's the ground around them sinking.
