Diabetes

Hi There, so I was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Now, my issue is. i need the machine and strips, and the prescription my doc gave me cost like $100, just for that, now the $40 pills, I paid for, but I don't have the $100 to fork out for the machine and strips. Anyone know where I could get that for free? or cheaper.

I have had type 1 diabetes for the past 20 years. Even with my insurance, I have to buy the strips (about a dollar a strip) and then get reimbursed for 80%. It does add up to alot of money. The best deal I can think of is alot of the drug stores will give you a machine when you buy the strips. Not much but every penny counts. I have been trying for years to get help paying for insulin, needles, strips, etc. The government says there is hope coming, so I guess its wait and see. Good luck to you!

Yep she's right. When you buy strips you will get the machime for free. Ask for the one that you don't need to poke your finger but can use your forearm or leg or palm instead. the strips for those caost the same as the other ones.

You do get the machine for free when you buy the strips. Try the Superstore Pharmacy they have the cheapest dispensing fee and may also heve a cheaper price on the strips. You don't have to get the particular brand (of machine and strips) that your doctor suggests, if there is a cheaper brand you can use those, they all work the same way.

Hi and thanks for the reply everyone.

I was able to get the community health center to pay for my first strips, and they gave me a machine, I guess that will keep me going till January. I think it’s ridiculous that most health plans wont pay for the strips. they say diabetes is a serious illness, but the government seems to not take it too seriously. Well new years resolution, to loose weight and get rid of this, hope it works.

Yeah Tassy you are right. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the end of February. I lost 20 pounds and my sugars went back to normal. At 30 pounds I no longer needed the metformin either. It is hard to lose though but I am proof it can be done.

If you have Blue Cross your plan may pay for the strips (ours does) if you have a prescription...we pay for them at the store and then we're re-imbursed for 80% of the cost..

The problem there is if you have blue cross that's fine but don't even bother trying to gret blue cross after being diagnosed with diabetes. They quoted me 680.00 a month as the basic package.

My husband has type 1 diabetes and we are losing his health plan. Forget getting another. He has been lobbying our MP's for compassionate drug coverage... When the election was taking place they said "oh we help poor people"..well the middle class need help too! or we will also be poor.
