Topic: Will you be getting the swine flu shot?
We're all getting it, my husband and I and our 10 year old daughter...as well as my parents. I'm not taking any chances...my doctor is insisting we get both flu shots and I trust her judgement 100% ( and no she is not one of these quack doctors). I'm not going to take the chance of my daughter ending up deathly sick and then thinking "oh i should have done it when I had the chance"...there is less mercury in the vaccine then is in a can of tuna.

It does meet standards, that is why it has been released to be administered to the public. It is a FLU shot, just a different strain than past years....a more deadly strain...people have been getting flu shots for how many years, and safely I might add. There is nothing in life 100% guaranteed to be without risk.....is there a risk going out for a walk, of course, you could be hit by lightening, you could be run over, but it is such a minute risk! You still do it. Think about it...of course you are going to find risks. Read your labels on your tylenol bottle, take a peek at what "could" happen, will it, probably not, but it could. Not everyone is going to get this shot, that is a given. But, there will be no regrets in my house if someone does take ill, because I know that we did what we could to prevent it.

So, then, all you nay sayers, u guys must believe in polio?[/QUOTE]
I don't understand what it is that your saying here? My question, is if you have already gotten the flu shot, why bother getting the H1n1? I realize that this "flu" is of a different strain, but like it has already been said, even those that have gotten the flu shot STILL end up getting the flu. My older children are asthmatics and both adults, they have both gotten the flu shot and have not yet decided on the H1N1. I personally have concerns with getting something that has been mass produced, hasn't been run through completely as far as long term effects etc go. Look how many, MANY years they have been trying to find a "preventative" for cancer...I mean WTH....STILL no vaccine or cure for that. So explain to me how this vaccine is a "true" preventative??

The H1N1 vaccine is a specific vaccine, meant to provide resistance(if you will) in an individual that has had the shot. Can one still develop influenza or H1N1 after having the vaccines? Yes, however it is less severe, shorter in duration, shorter recovery period, and with far less complications.(in most cases)
My entire family will be getting the H1N1 vaccine.

It is NOT the same as the flu shot or we would be fine with only the one. It has not been properly tested at all. If you go to the government web site there i actually a paragraph where the state that they will adjust the dosage, one shot or 2 etc based on whay happens when it is widely distributed.
The last flu pandemic they created a vaccine for there were more people died from the shot than the actual flu. It is also so new and rushed, what about long term side affects.
The average age of the affected people in Canada is actually 27 so the don't even fall into the category that would get the vaccine and the cases in children have been mild and passed quickly.

Same could be said if you give your child an untested vaccine and they suffer from complications.

Please post the sites you are getting your information from. This is the type of unsubstantiated comments being passed off as fact that an uneducated/less educated person might base their decision on after hearing. People need to talk to their health care provider with any concerns they might have. They are in the best position to help you make an informed decision for you and your family. As to adjusting the shot to 2 doses, that is routinely done in children (under a certain age) that are getting a flu shot for the first time.

You can get all the flu shots in the world - you can still be a carrier. Perhaps even more so IMO because you may not even know you have the flu and go about your normal day playing with kids, kissing babies or caring for your elderly parents or something.
I hate this because I understand the media is our to scare! - It's how they get good ratings. How do we know when to believe them? And as far as putting all your faith in your health professional - that's a joke!!! They're not god. The flu shot has only been around for as long as it has & no one can say for certain what consequences (if any) it may bring in 25-50 years.
Just as an example... where were our trusted doctors when bisphenol a started being used in our baby bottles? or when they started selling cigarettes? I trust time a hell of a lot more than any doctor!
Anyhow - I think I'm opting out (as I've always done). I do have a newborn in the house and it is making my decision a little more difficult this year.
My final 2 cents... We've been given immune systems for a reason! I'm scared that with changing our ways (hand sanitizer out the ying-yang & flu shots) - we're practically asking for more frequent super bugs. We're only looking at short term solutions for a long term fact of life (the flu). I think we're doing ourselves more harm than good!
I hope I'm wrong though.

macmike, I hope you reconsider not getting the shot. I believe you fall into the target group with a newborn in your home. (congrats on the new addition to your family!)

You buckle your child into a car seat, not because you are purposely going to smash your car, but to prevent serious injury to your child if you are in an accident.

The thing that is scary is that there have been more deaths of young healthy people (children especially) this season so far from H1N1 than the whole regular flu season. The biggest problem with this flu compared to the regular flu is the fact that it is young, healthy individuals that are dying from it rather than people with complications.
Also, when you end up with 30% or better of a school, hospital, or office (as it is in some places already) down with the flu at the same time, it tells me that this is a hum-dinger of flu and that it will cause hardship in the workplace and schools, etc.
I watched the news last night and they were showing the map of where it has spread already and this flu is moving fast. I hope I can get my shot before it hits our family.

Ask any of your family physicians about it, they will put it like this, do you buckle up your child for safety before you go for a drive? Do not rely on information from media, go to the professionals you know! I do not know of 1 doctor at work that won't be getting it. I agree 110% I would not wat to see my wife die from this flu. It's not your every day flu. It has Serious consequences! Yes you can die from the ordinary flu. But this one is much more serious.
Too many people just are not taking this serious. It can kill you or your loved ones. Once some one is a deaths door it's too late to change your mind.

Topic: Will you be getting the swine flu shot?
This is an email I just received from a friend - good information in it.
prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice
Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).
The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know
The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):
1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt)... *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected o ne. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.* Neti pots and sinus rinse kits are available at the drug store and relatively inexpensive….under $15.
5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.
I suggest you pass this on to your entire e-list. You never knowwho might pay attention to it - and STAY ALIVE because of it...

You must work for the media! LOL
This is the kind of scare tactic I'm talking about. - Prove to me that H1N1 is any more serious than the regular seasonal flu. From my research it tends to be more easily contracted but the death rate is actually lower than the regular seasonal flu.
