Is anyone else having a problem with these pests this year?? I have never ever had them and now they are taking over my kitchen and my bathroom, no where else! Any tips or ideas? There is absolutely no fruit around or anything else that could attract them...help!!!!

Personally I think they're drawn to those compost carts...and it is weird cause they are around the sink drains.

I don't have a compost bin...and I think you are right, they seem to be coming from the sink drains. A friend of mine suggested Draino as that is what she did...i'll let you know if it works!

We had an issue this year. It could be something in your drain - pouring vinegar down the drain does help.

To catch the little suckers, put some wine or fruit juice in a glass, cover the glass with saran wrap, and then poke a few tiny holes in the saran wrap. The flies are attracted to the sugar and will fly in through the holes and become trapped. This did the trick for us!

They do seem to be worse this year. I don't know why, I went in to work and they were everywhere in the kitchen EXCEPT over the fruit. In fact, they did seem to be over the drains. There was no spills, nothing to account for them. They scoured and scrubbed and disinfected, no luck, in the end they had to buy a special trap for them.

We seem to get the darn things flitting around every year, and yes it is our lil green box inside the house they seem to be attracted to. We use the same technique that you suggested lissa, except we didn't try it with juice.

We take an apple or orange and slice it up. Then we use washed out yogurt containers or something along the lines of that, place the fruit inside, and then put the saran wrap over. I find a pencil is too big unless it is really sharp because you don't want to poke the holes to big. Do it quite small. The buggers climb in, but cannot get back out. Lissa is right, it works like a charm! Keep doing that and within a few days you will see them disappear!

That is so funny. I was actually looking for something else when I stumbled upon this message... cause we have been bugged by fruit flies since a couple of months and we have NO clue where they are coming from.

Now, they do seem to come from the drain in the toilet in our case. I cleaned out the drain and that overflow thingy with Lysol a couple of weeks ago and that worked... for a while. We just try to keep it clean but it's no guarantee. Good luck with finding the source.

Your problem is they aren't fruit flies, they are drain flies.
