pets grieve too

2 weeks have past since Jake left us. It hs indeed been a rough time, for us nd for our Jessie dog. She and Jake had been together for almost 9 years..insperable. If he left a room, she left it too. Heaven forbid if I walked one without the other. You would hear the howling and crying no matter where you went.
Jessie is grieving now. I do not think she understands he is gone as she never saw him pass. Nor does she relize that those are his ashes are sitting on the shelf. But she knows he isn't here. The past 2 days she has been running to the door whenever someone comes in looking to see who it is. I think waiting for Jake...looking for him.
I have been introducing her to other social dogs in the neighborhood the past few weeks. She hasn't shown any interest in playing yet. My heart breaks for my Jessie. I can't change what happened to Jake (God knows I would if I could because I miss him so frigging much) She is sad, depressed and lonely. Getting another dog at this time isn't an option for us. Neither is fostering. Jessie needs our full attention & dedication until it is her time.
I wonder what is going on through her head....

That's why I was glad I brought Indy home from the vet for one more night before I took her back for the final trip, Neko got to see her and know she was not well, she could not move, jump, eat...the next morning after I came home with an empty carrier I went to bed and Neko woke me with one loud wail, when she had NEVER screamed in her 10 years of life. Then she came and got in bed with me, which she also had not done before, Indy always had that "privilege". From that day on until I had to put her down last December she slept with me. After that first loud wail, she never again seemed to miss her buddy of 8 years, cats are more opportunistic I guess and she took to being an "only" cat with bed privileges with a vengeance.

Yeah, I agree that animals greive for one another. When I had cats put down, I always brought their bodies home so the other cats could say goodbye. They always came to the body and sniffed around for a couple of minutes and wandered off. It seemed to help them say goodbye. When my other cats never came back , the cats left behind always seemed to be waiting for them. You'd notice especially in the morning when the ones left behind would go looking for the missing cats under the couch and beds. The ones they got to say goodbye to, they seemed to know they were gone. I had some cats who would always cuddle up together to sleep. Whe one of the pair went missing the one left behind would go to the sleeping area and look around and meow for their companion before settling down.

It is really interesting in a sad kind of way to see who she is now personality wise. I never realized how much Jake overshadowed her in so many ways even though she was the alpha dog.
She is just a sweet sweet girl.
