How come .....canadians need a passport to cross the boarder but.... americans dont until ..december ?This doesn't make sense...

Canadians don't need a passport to cross the border until July 2008. You only need one if you are flying into the U.S. Americans also need a passport if they are flying into the U.S.
I suggest you check your info a little closer before you start questioning things.
The United States has implemented a requirement that anyone not American who enters the USA requires a passport. The Canadian government has not yet implemented the same requirement.

I don't believe we as Canadian citizens need passports to cross the US border just yet, I think all that is required is picture ID such as a drivers license or in the case of children, regular picture ID, which can be obtained at Service New Brunswick at King Square, and a birth certificate. Has something changed?
Hasn't changed officially, yet - but will be soon. It will be a requirement next year. They ask for passports but will accept photo ID - unless you're flying.

Since january whenever i go over i am asked for my passport , and my brother who is american just went to get a passport in pittsburgh and he was told he didnt need one only canadians need one he called the travel agents and was told the same thing

Different countries have different requirements. Because your brother is an American he will not require one to enter his own country. A passport is to allow you entry into foreign countries.
Also - we have not yet changed our entry policy to require Americans to produce a passport when entering Canada. This is a policy that the USA has implemented. We have no choice but to comply since we are foreigners entering another country.

hes coming here not entering the states so all he needs is his picture id and etc ? hes getting oneanyways because he'll need one come december but it wont be there for 6 weeks and hes leaving in 2 not a big deal though he just wanted to make he doesnt drive 18 hours to get denied at the boarder

yeah as was everyone else who said that.
Canadians don't need a pass port just yet to cross the border to the US either. I was there a couple weekends ago.

Luvz ya.... I wasn't being hostile, you asked a question ,I gave you the answer according to the law as it now stands, you then went on to say what a post office in pittsburg told you. If you don't want someone elses opinion, then don't ask for it, just go with what you think is right.
In another forum, you were adamant that it takes 5 1/2 to 6 hrs to get to Halifax, Numerous people disputed your claim and you kept arguing.
Seems to be a trend with you.

Since January 23, 2007, a new American law requires everyone entering the United States BY AIR to have a valid passport.
Canadians can continue to use such documents as their birth certificates and drivers’ licence to cross the Canada-U.S. border BY LAND AND SEA for at least another year.
From US to Canada
The answer to the question, "Do I Need a Passport to Visit Canada?" depends on how you are planning to cross the Canadian border. As of January 23, 2007, the WHTI requires American citizens to present a passport when crossing the Canadian border by air. So, all airports in Canada now ask to see passports from all people traveling from outside of Canada, including from the US.
Until June 1, 2009, if you are an American citizen crossing the border into Canada by land or water, you need ID that proves two things: 1) Citizenship, and 2) Identity by way of a photo.

If what i have been reading is right, this is true. Your American friend does not need a passport to enter Canada. He will need a passport to get back into the states, if he is flying.
Anyone flying into the states needs a passport. It doesn't matter if they are Canadian, Irish or even American. If you are flying into the states, you need a passport.

wow! It only took me 3 hrs a couple years ago to drive from SJ to Halifax to visit my best friend. I even stopped for regular bathroom breaks. Guess I make good time on the highway! Really though I think it depends which way you go. If you stay on the highway the whole way there it only takes about 3 hrs.
As for crossing the boarder into the states you only need a photo ID and a birth certificate until sometime next year. I like going to Mardens occasionally.

Here is a tip for everyone. Hubby and I went to Freddy today to apply for passports. We were there at 8:15, with only 8 ppl ahead of us. The office opens at 8:30-..we were out of there at 9, and they told us we would get our passports in 3.5 weeks.
They said it was slow today beacuse Tues, Wed and Thurs mornings are the best times to go.
I remember when I had mine, i got it the same day. I had to wait around town all day, but i needed it for a departure 3 days after...
For special circumstances they will expedite the process, I think it's an extra $75 or $80 and you need to be able to provide your travel documents to substantiate your claim.
I got mine in November and had it within 10 days of visiting their office, but with the push it's a substantially longer wait now.

I didn't have to prove why I needed it so fast, I did have to pay the extra $75, and they were required to be able to make contact with every one of my references. If they couldn't contact all references, i didn't get it same day, and didn't get my $75 back as they had attempted. I didn't know the required contact part, but I got lucky and they were able to...

Funny - one of my colleagues had to provide travel documentation. Isn't it great how they standardize everything! :confused:
Talk about making life difficult!
I'm just glad I got mine when I did, since I'm leaving for the Dominican in 2 days!! :D

Well - one of my travel companions just realized that her passport is expired so she's rushing to the passport office right now. I'll let you know how it turns out! :-)

Sorry - they changed the link :( . It was an article about them changing the requirement and now are not going to require children 17 and under to have a passport to gain entry into the US by land. The mandate will remain as is for air travel, however.

Does anyone know how ofetn you have to get a pass port renewed and how much it costs?
every 4 years. I think the price is the same as getting one originally, but i'm not sure...

5 Years and it's about $80-$90. Plus the price of a picture. Which varies by where you get it done.

I had my passport done in 1999 and it's already expired :P
I think it's only good for a few years.

Check my post again, I used the word THINK, because I wasn't sure. My response was just a suggestion. Sort of like the variety of answers that were given.
I did check since posting and found the right answer to be 5 years from date of issue.

I already knew. I take passport photos daily.
