City of Saint John Snow Control Operations – Wednesday, February 25th

Saint John Works had full street crews working on street widening and pushback operations on Tuesday, February 24, through to 11:00pm in some cases. The focus was to clean up streets from the snow storm on Monday and improve their usability.

An overnight snow parking ban was declared for the South/Central Peninsula last evening from 11:00pm to 7:00am this morning. Nightshift crews mounted a large snow removal operation in addition to the normal pushback widening of streets in the peninsula. A total of 285 loads of snow were removed mainly from narrow peninsula streets - Sewell Street, Horsefield Street, Harding Street, St. Andrews Street, Orange Street, Elliott Row, as well as curb cuts along Duke Street, King Street East and City Road. Eighty- five loads of snow were removed from snow ban parking lots to prepare them for the overnight ban on parking. The previous night, 200 loads of snow were removed from Central Business District streets.

Sidewalk crews were called in early yesterday morning at 3:00 am and worked all day to clear priority sidewalks. Progress was good given that 37 cm (15 inches) of snow has fallen, but there are many sidewalks that will require heavy equipment before they are open.

Today’s focus for street crews is on removal of snow with trucks and using large snow blowers to widen streets by blowing snow off the street surface to the back of the right of way. In addition there are smaller crews working to expose drainage basins in low lying trouble spots. Snow removal operations today are taking place North (Spruce, Visart, Tartan, Cranston), East (Edith, Park), and West (Harding, Whipple, Lancaster Avenue, Prince, Charlotte). Free blowing is also taking place North and East - Ragged Point, Boars Head, Lansdowne, Thornborough, Wellesley, Hilyard, Seeley, Highwood, Hickey Road, Heatherway, Grandview, and Champlain Drive. Snow removal operations will resume in the South/Central Peninsula this evening at 10:00 pm.

Sidewalk crews are working today in all four quadrants of the City. It is anticipated that routes in the South quadrant will be completed today. Focus again is on opening sidewalks in priority areas – e.g. school zones, high foot traffic areas.
Full dayshift and nightshift street and sidewalk crews, will be working daily for the rest of this week to improve conditions on City streets and sidewalks. Assistance is also being given by Saint John Water staff in moving snow and exposing drainage basins.
