Temporary Power Transformer Installed at Corner of King and Charlotte Streets

(Saint John) Saint John Energy crews are completing installation of a temporary power transformer on the sidewalk outside the Royal Bank building on the corner of King Street and Charlotte Street. The installation became necessary after a power failure in the bank on Wednesday when water from the building sprinkler system escaped into the basement and shorted out the main power transformer.

“A replacement transformer is being ordered but could take up to 18 weeks to be delivered,” said David Trifts of Commercial Realty and Property Management, the firm which maintains the building. A Saint John Energy spokesperson said that a temporary transformer is being installed in order that the building may be opened for business again. The City’s Building and Inspections Services staff was notified of the problem and Municipal Operations and Engineering staff are working with Saint John Energy in order to accommodate the structure and maintain pedestrian traffic flows at the busy intersection.

Tim O’Reilly, Operations Manager for Pedestrian and Traffic Services has been on site and City staff will be following up with The Saint John Ability Advisory Committee and other groups in order to determine if there are any special concerns to be addressed.
