SNOW CONTROL OPERATIONS THROUGHOUT SAINT JOHN – WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH

Issued by the Communications Department, City of Saint John on behalf of Paul Groody, Commissioner, Municipal Operations and Engineering

A full complement of City Works crews has been out since 1:00 am this morning.

I want to extend a huge and sincere thank you to those crews, their foremen and management staff who have worked tirelessly in responding to the challenges of a very difficult winter and record conditions. Contracted resources have also given good support. I also want to express special appreciation to those citizens who have worked with us, particularly over the past week or so. Your efforts make a big difference.

Snow crews and maintenance staff have been working 12 to 16-hour days, and sometimes more. Many of our workers have not had a day off in the last 14. Despite this, it has been gratifying to see their spirit and dedication - these people understand their mission to serve the public. I am very proud of both our Works and our Fleet teams

Winter will be with us for a while yet; we need the public’s cooperation:
1. Be patient and be careful.
2. Do not block sidewalks with snow from your property!!!
3. Do not park vehicles on or across sidewalks; vehicles so placed will be towed away.
4. Get your vehicles off the street; adequate service cannot otherwise be provided.
5. Clear ice and snow from catch basins and the fire hydrants in your neighbourhood.
6. Work with our crews; they are out there serving you.
7. Residents of South Peninsula – call 658 4040 or listen to the radio for notification of snow bans.
8. Alternate side parking - please adhere to the guidelines.

The concentrated operation of the past five days, involving a full deployment of personnel and equipment for extended shifts (both day and night) and contracted resources, has been effective. We still need to remove ice and push back snow from some streets; work to do so will be proceeding based on the priority classification of those streets.

Given the record snow accumulation, we must emphasize the importance of opening up catch basins and drainage courses. The snow will melt and the water it produces must be allowed to drain. Please assist us in opening up catch basins and drainage routes near your home. Be careful in doing so.

The City of Saint John thanks you for your cooperation and assistance.
