Clean-up efforts of City streets and sidewalks continuing

Saint John Works crews completed push back operations on all streets in the Central Peninsula during last night's temporary ban on overnight parking. In addition to the pushback, City of Saint John Works Director Shayne Galbraith said crews also removed 112 truckloads of snow from the following streets in the Peninsula – Horsefield, Harding, and St. Andrews Streets, Princess Street (Charlotte to Water), North and South Market Streets, North & South Kings Square, Queen Street (Charlotte to Prince William), Germain Street (Duke to Union), King Street (Charlotte to Germain) and sections of Sydney Street, Leinster Street and King Street East. Sunday's heavy snow storm followed by freezing rain and rain well into Monday morning and then cold temperatures last night was "a particularly nasty combination" said Galbraith, but despite the weather, City streets "are in generally good condition".

Sidewalk crews worked until 11 pm last night and are working again today into the evening. The initial focus was on the Central Business District and school areas. "Progress is steady but slow given the large accumulation of snow on sidewalks and the following freezing rain and rain that made the snow heavy and hard", said Galbraith. Additional snow pushed on sidewalks from adjacent properties continues to hamper progress. Citizens are asked for patience as crews work hard to re-establish the usability of their sidewalks over the coming days.

Clean up operations and sidewalk clearing will resume tomorrow and snow removal is scheduled around schools and major bus stops; Bayside Drive, Somerset Street and Main Street North are also scheduled for snow removal.

Continued snow removal is scheduled for tonight in the Central Peninsula for King Street, Chipman Hill, St. Patrick Street, Viaduct, Charlotte Street, Prince William Street, Canterbury Street, Coburg Street, and Union Street. Motorists are asked to use caution when passing near removal crews and to expect delays as a result of removal operations. Galbraith also stressed the need for parents to warn children not to play in snow banks near City streets where snow removal operations may be taking place because of the danger posed by snow removal equipment.
