City departments partner with MADD and Operation Red Nose to get the
"Don't Drink and Drive" message out during this holiday season

Saint John, NB - The City of Saint John reminds citizens not to drink and drive, and is lending support to the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Red Ribbon Campaign and Operation Red Nose, a service that offers residents who have been imbibing a drive home in their own cars.

Over 200 City of Saint John vehicles from all departments -- including police and fire-- have been outfitted with red ribbons in support of the annual (MADD) Project Red Ribbon campaign. The campaign, which runs from November 1 through to January 5, acknowledges and honours those affected by impaired driving and reminds drivers not to drive while impaired.

For members of the Saint John Police Force, who support MADD year round, this a particularly busy time. “In addition to increasing spot checks, we hold information spot checks with members of MADD where we give out red ribbons and literature,” says Sergeant Jeff LaFrance of the force’s Traffic Division. "We also participate in the MADD Red Ribbon tree decorating ceremony at Kings Square where we hang red ribbons in memory of those killed as a result of drunk driving." Staff at City payment centers distribute red ribbons and collect donations.

The police force has also given assistance to Operation Red Nose a new free service, launched this year from City Hall, which drives partygoers home in their own vehicles. It is operated by Fusion Saint John with the help of the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) and many volunteers. The program continues to operate on December 27. The Saint John Police Force did the background checks on volunteers and, it’s rumoured the Mayor himself might be behind the wheel on one of the upcoming shifts.

"It's important to do everything we can to ensure that those who are out on our roads are safe", says Saint John Mayor Ivan Court. "Outfitting City vehicles serves as a reminder of this important message where drivers need to be reminded the most - in their cars. And you never know who will be driving you home if you call Operation Red Nose."
