Saint John to “Carry the Torch”
City named as part of the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay

Saint John NB – Residents learned today that the City has been chosen to be a part of The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. The City will host the flame November 24, 2009.
The announcement, made by Deputy Mayor Stephen Chase in front of City Hall, coincided with hundreds of similar announcements being made in communities along the relay route. “Saint John’s participation in the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will certainly stand out as a memory to last a lifetime for our community,” Chase said.
The City’s announcement featured a flag raising by Dr. Andrea Garland a member of the City’s recreation committee, Mike Butler an internationally known badminton player, who competed for Canada at the Olympic Games held in Seoul South Korea and Bill Finley, Principal of Lorne Middle School, the City-sponsored PALs school. Mr. Finley was part of the torch relay for the 1988 games in Calgary. The flag was flanked by two symbolic torches, made by City staff.
Mayor Ivan Court, who met with VANOC organizers in May said, ”Organizers saw the beauty, history and warmth of the people here and are excited to have Saint John as part of the route.”
Details for the event in the City will be released in the new year.
