The City of Saint John welcomes 2010 Finale des Jeux de l’Acadie
Saint John Mayor Ivan Court is pleased that the City of Saint John has been awarded the 31st Finale des Jeux de l’Acadie, as announced at the annual general meeting of the Société des Jeux de l’Acadie on November 1st in Bathurst. The City will host the games from June 30 to July 4, 2010. Saint John hosted a successful games in 1996 and is looking forward to putting on an even better event this time around.
Mayor Court would like to thank the Mayors and representatives of Bertrand, Paquetville and Saint-Isidore who also applied to host the games in 2010. He indicated how great it is to see so many communities interested in hosting such an exceptional event.
“We are so pleased to be able to hold such a significant event for the Francophone youth and community in the Atlantic region,” said Mayor Court. “This event is a great way not only for the Francophone community, but for our entire community, to come together and celebrate our youth and our multiculturalism, to promote sport, and to honour French language and culture in Saint John and Southern New Brunswick.”
The City of Saint John will work together with the games organizing committee, L’Association régionale de la Communauté Francophone de Saint-Jean (ARCf), as well as 14 other organizations associated with ARCf and nine other key organizations in the region, to promote and run this exciting event. The organizing committee will also be looking for approximately 1200 volunteers to participate in the games.
2010 will mark a unique year for the City of Saint John Francophone community, and the community as a whole. 2010 will be the 25th anniversary of the opening of Samuel-de-Champlain school. Les Jeux de l’Acadie will allow the Francophone community of Saint John to celebrate this significant event with the rest of l’Acadie. 2010 also marks the 225th anniversary of the City of Saint John. The City is interested in integrating its anniversary celebrations into some of the events at the Jeux de l’Acadie, including the opening and closing ceremonies.
The City of Saint John has approved a grant for $40,000 for les Jeux de l’Acadie. This, along with $20,000 from the Société des Jeux de l’Acadie will allow the City and the Francophone community to host a fantastic event. Athletes, coaches and staff will make use of existing sports facilities around the City of Saint John, including the newly refurbished UNBSJ Canada Games Stadium and gymnasiums, Lord Beaverbrook Arena, Shamrock Park, as well as the Centre Samuel-de-Champlain, M. Gerald Teed, Centennial and Millidgeville North Schools. Le centre Samuel-de-Champlain will be the central location for les Jeux de l’Acadie, including public events and banquets.
There are more than 6,000 Francophones living in Saint John, as well as more than 19,000 people who are bilingual or speak French in Greater Saint John.
The first Jeux de l'Acadie took place from August 29 to September 1, 1979.
