If you don't work in a unionized environment, what is the rules on breaks? If you worked 8 to 5 and got an hour for lunch...do you have to be given breaks?

Just curious how it works at other people's work...

I used to work at a pizza place as a second job, and there were no breaks. I sat down, and he said this is not fun time, it's work time. Soooo, i said it's quittin time, i've worked for 7 hours a day for 4 days, with NO breaks. I called the labor board and then they got involved. They don't take that stuff lightly (or so they told me)

I work for municipal goverment, 8 hours, 1 hour unpaid lunch, and 2 5 minute breaks (run down for a coffee, or something like that)

i werk at sobeys and our breaks go by shift length
for example 4 hours - 6 hours you get one 20 min break.
7 or 8 you get a half hour unpaid and a 20 min break(or two 20s both paid)
and 9 or more is 2 20s and an hour unpaid.

I believe the NB standard is for every four hours worked you are entitled to a 30 minute break. So if you get a 30 minute lunch unpaid and 15 minute breaks throughout the day than your employer is giving you two paid breaks that they really do not have to.

Nice one icedragon, I got a good chuckle.

Or maybe it is a 15 minute break for every 4 hours worked. Either way, if you get a 30 minute unpaid lunch and two 15 minute paid breaks than you are doing alright.

The minimum here in NB is one 1/2 break after every 5 consecutive hours worked as is set by the WHSCC. I recently won a pie in a bet on this at my workplace.

What kind of pie?

Well, at first I had been convinced that I had lost so I won the lemon meringue pie I had made back. Then I was given a butterscotch pie and a pumpkin pie but they were from Irving so they didn't count. The victory pie was sugar pie. I'd never had it before and it was pretty good! Don't worry, I shared all of them with everyone ;)

yeah, same at my work. not that they get more breaks, but just take them and get away with it because all the supervisors smoke too...what a world we live in...
