Advisory For Immediate Release
Friday, September 26, 2008 City preparing for upcoming weather
The City of Saint John is currently monitoring weather forecasts for approaching weather
systems set to track across New Brunswick beginning on Saturday. The City of Saint John
Emergency Management Organization is tracking two storms through Environment Canada
and the Canadian Hurricane Centre, one of which has now been upgraded to Tropical Storm
Kyle, predicted to impact Saint John and track through New Brunswick beginning Sunday.
Various response agencies and departments within the City are each taking measures to
prepare, including checking equipment, ensuring sufficient manpower is available should
additional resources be required, and checking and monitoring the more flood-prone areas
throughout the City. City departments and staff are prepared to respond should the need
arise.
Citizens should take measures to protect their families and properties in the event these
systems effect Saint John as currently predicted.
In anticipation of possible flooding:
• Ensure the drainage for downspouts on your home are a sufficient distance from the
home so that the water moves away from the building
• IF you have a sump pump ensure you pump water far away from your foundation
• Move any items stored in your basement to a higher level
• Take precautions to protect electrical/natural gas/propane heating equipment. For
concerns about your electricity call Saint john Energy at 658-5252
• Remove any toxic substances (ie., pesticides, insecticides) from the flood prone areas to
prevent pollution
To protect against high winds:
• Secure any lawn/patio furniture or store indoors
• Prepare for the possibility of a loss of power

Citizens should ensure they have a complete 72-hour emergency kit which should include:
• flashlight with spare batteries
• battery-powered radio in good working order; have extra batteries
• warm clothing, including waterproof outer garments and footwear
• blankets
• all necessary medication
• infant care items
• personal toiletries
• identification for each member of your household
• non-perishable food
• water
• any important personal and family documents
• adequate pet supplies
Citizens should also:
• Ensure your list of emergency numbers is current and easily accessible
• Check on your neighbours (especially elderly or handicapped)
• Stay away from flooded areas
• Observe traffic barriers
• Pre-arrange for alternate shelter
