A 28-year-old man has been charged in connection with a reported stabbing onboard a Greyhound bus in rural Ontario Sunday, a chilling reminder of the murder of a Winnipeg man on another bus two months ago.

David Wayne Roberts has been charged with one count of aggravated assault and two counts of breaching probation. The Manitouwadge, Ont., man is set to appear for a bail hearing later Monday on Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

Ontario Provincial Police say a 20-year-old man was assaulted around 4:15 p.m. ET on Sunday on board a Greyhound bus travelling from Toronto to Winnipeg.

The incident occurred five kilometres south of White River, on Highway 17 near Sault Ste. Marie.

Roberts was arrested soon after the incident when he got off the bus several kilometres from the scheduled stop in White River.

OPP Const. Jim Searle would not say whether a weapon was recovered on the suspect or at the scene because it is still too early in the investigation.

The victim, identified by witnesses as an Asian male in his mid-20s, is recovering from non-life threatening injuries. Searle said the man is expected to be released from hospital in the next few days. Police could not say where he was from.

Meanwhile, the Wawa News, a local media outlet is reporting that Robert was put on the bus by police officers as a part of a policy where police assist hitchhikers, vagrants and mentally-ill patients who are unable to leave rural communities due to financial issues.

Searle would not confirm this, only saying that the police were helping out the local detachment.

The OPP have refused to divulge what kind of assistance they were providing, saying that the township police will "take the lead" into that part of the investigation. An officer at the detachment told Canwest News Service that the town's police chief will be making comments later in the day about the incident.

Abby Wambaugh, a spokeswoman with Greyhound, said Monday the company is co-operating with police in their investigation.

A total of 14 passengers were on the bus at the time, she said. No one else was injured.

This is the second violent altercation to occur on a Greyhound bus in Canada in recent months.

In July, near Portage la Prairie, Man., Winnipeg resident Tim McLean was stabbed and beheaded on board a Greyhound.

White River is about 400 kilometres east of Thunder Bay, Ont.
