Flooding Update
Issued: September 7, 2008
Members of Saint John EMO met Sunday, September 7 at 12:15 pm to assess the response to damages caused by last night’s heavy rains and to clarify what other actions may be needed to ensure safety of our residents.
Saint John EMO advises residents to use caution on City streets, stay away from the flooded areas and to keep away (especially children) from fast running water.
Municipal Operations reports the following road closures:
· Kennebecasis Drive near Crown Hill
· Lorneville Road at Mill Creek
· McAllister Drive between Major Brooks and Westmorland Road

The following streets are flooded and closed to through traffic:
· Rothesay Avenue
· Simpson Drive
· Brown Street
· Broadway
· Glen Road
· Todd Street
· Holland Street
· Ashton Road
· Dutch Garden Road
· Railway overpass at Old Rothesay Road and Rothesay Avenue

A numbers of other roads have been damaged including:
· Loch Lomond Road at Studio Road
· Old Black River Road – culverts
· McAllister Drive between Loch Lomond Road and Westmorland Road

Many streets are covered with gravel and debris and the shoulders have been washed out. Officials are asking motorists to use extreme caution as crews from Municipal Operations begin to repair damages and clean up.

Saint John Water (SJW) reports that the drinking water is safe. Please note: Saint John Water will continue monitor for elevated turbidity levels in the drinking water over the next few days. The Department of the Environment has been notified that as a result of the increase in the volume of water, several pumping stations in the area are being bypassed. Staff at SJW are working to mitigate impacts to the water and waste water system.
Saint John Energy reports no interruptions.
Through the night, various City departments brought in extra crews to deal with the damage to our transportation network:
· The Public Safety Communications Centre (PSCC) recorded over 200 calls (140 flooding related). Extra staff have been brought on to assist with the volume of calls.
· Municipal Operations called in four additional crews as much of the damage is to our roads.
· The Saint John Fire Department (SJFD ) received over 40 emergency flooding calls and have 16 pumps on the go. Extra crews have been brought on to assist with flooding relief and to maintain service levels.
· The Saint John Police Force (SJPF) is assisting departments with road closures.

Saint John EMO continues to monitor the situation.
