Flooding Update
Issued: September 8, 2008
As of 5:15 pm this evening, officials from the Municipal Operations Department report the following roads remain closed due to flooding:
• Kennebecasis Drive at Brothers Cove - inspected by Engineering staff – requires Provincial inspection and approval
• Lorneville Road - inspected by Engineering staff - reinstatement repair expected to begin tomorrow
• Simpson Drive
• Todd Street
• Glen Road
• Brown Street
• Holland Street
• Golden Grove Road
• Rothesay Road at the Railway overpass
• McAllister Drive from Major Brook to Golden Grove
Glen Falls area flooding is not expected to recede until tomorrow.
Streets Opened today:
• Ashburn Lake Road
• Rothesay Avenue (McAllister to Railway Overpass)
Works Crews have concentrated on repairs to flood damage on the following today:
• Hillcrest Road - large washout repair -ongoing into tomorrow
• Old Black River Road - eight washed out culverts
• Foster Thurston Drive - shouldering and washouts
• McAllister Drive - storm system/culvert cleaning and repairs
• Jones Drive - culverts and ditching
• Anthony's Cove Road - culverts
• Kennebecasis Drive - shouldering & washouts
• By- Road 2 and Narrows Road - reinstatement of washouts
• Hickey Road - shoulders and washouts
Many streets are covered with gravel and debris and the shoulders have been washed out. Officials are asking motorists to use extreme caution as crews from Municipal Operations begin to repair damages and clean up.
Saint John Water (SJW) reports that the drinking water is safe. Please note: Saint John Water will continue monitor for elevated turbidity levels in the drinking water over the next few days. The Department of the Environment has been notified that as a result of the increase in the volume of water, several pumping stations in the area are being bypassed. Staff at SJW are working to mitigate impacts to the water and waste water system.
These road closures will remain in effect through the morning rush hour. Another update will be sent Tuesday, September 9th, mid-morning.
