Email from Rogers

I got an email from roger ,saying they knew I downloaded a copy righted movie. the email had the movie name ,the site it was from and the program I used my ip,they say not to do it again or I would lose my internet.just wondering if any body else ever got email like this?

I was using there Roger internet protection ,it probably sent back information to them ,I guess that probably how they spy on you.dirty little trick I say!!

is there a way you can switch it? I still think it is wrong they went into you files or however. how could they have found it out? are they the internet people now? Maybe they have an interest in the movie companies now. its like gm saying you cant buy their car because you may not stop at a red light.

I'd speculate they'd have an obligation to reasonably ensure their network was not being used for criminal behaviour, like stealing credit card information, access or distribution of child pornography, or (and no I'm not equating it to child pornography) stealing movies. It might have also been part of a Sting operation, where someone is monitoring the download site to see who is accessing it, and Rogers was told to inform their offending customers of the act. Website owner have the tools to know your IP address, browser and version, screen resolution, what pages you acessed for how long, ...

Perhaps it was better you got a warning e-mail, rather than a knock at the door by the police? A warning e-mail for something you knew was wrong sounds like the best thing that could have resulted.

Aliant is owned by Bell and Bell will make copyright infringement reports on their customers that they investigate. They might send an email to warn you but I don't think so, and they do investigate it.

It has nothing to do with your virus protection from Rogers. The movie studios watch the torrents of their movies and send the ISP, in your case Rogers, emails letting them know which IPs of their's they've found downloading movies. Rogers in turn emails you and warns you. I doubt anything would ever happen if you were to do it again.

it turns out that BayTSP, Inc.. works for movie company looking for people that download movies ,they send the information to your internet provider thats how roger got the information.so I dont recommend
downloading Charlettes web.

As far as I know, as long as you are not uploading(sharing) the downloaded file, tehn you are not infringing any Canadian copyright law (although this may have changed in the past few months, I have been out of the legal loop for a while). BUT, any ISP can cancel your service for any reason at all as per any standard ISP service agreements, and I would imagine that if they were flooded with complaints all day from these companies they would certainly pull your service rather than pu up with the hassle of defending themselves from getting sued by other big greedy corporations

A friend of mine actually got a letter in the mail from Rogers because he downloaded a game for his PSP. The letter was basically a cease and desist an the letter indicated when he downloaded the game, what site he downloaded from, and the title of the game.

when i lived in bc my isp sent me a letter in regards to downloading movies, it said that the movie company had contacted them because i was downloading the movie and if they didn't stop me the movie company was going to go after my isp. long story short, the isp said if i continued they'd pass on all my information to the movie company.

Maybe rogers recieve a similar threat?

This could lead to a showdown between two greedy corporations. The Movie industry vs The Telecommunications industry. The internet providers will only push so hard. Like Moe said, their's people out there who would dump them, if they couldn't file share. Bell, Aliant, Rogers, etc..would see a big decline in high speed customers. I'm guessing most h/s accounts are worth $50.00 or more/mnthly. Hollywood might just be trying a different approach. They watched the music industry try and fail, so they'll try it this way. I'd bet Hollywood is actually paying the carriers to put all this paper work through.

I use Utorrent an moviex site download from .I guess Ill have to try some program to change or block my ip some how.if I cant download what the point of paying about $50 buck a month just to able to check my email, mine as well get dialup again LOL

:confused: I have heard a few people that have Rogers for an ISP get these letters. After the letter or the email being sent I did not hear anything else happening after. So I think that this is more of a scare tactic from Rogers. I have been with Aliant for a while and have not gotten any letters **knock on wood**. I imagine Aliant has gotten letters reporting what one of their customers have been doing online but Aliants (I am speculating) point of view is we provide a service. What the customer does with the service is none of out buisness (to a degree). I am sure that Aliant believes that to a degree they have some kind of responsibility, but they are not about to tell a paying customer what they can and cannot do on a service that they are paid for.
Rogers send these emails or letters out because they want to limit their bandwidth to as much as possible general browsing, checking e mails etc. As in the past we had a few ISaintJohn users state that although they've paid for high speed ultra but are not getting the speed advertised or see any difference in speed after switching to the high speed ULTRA. Rogers connection is shared (I'm not sure about Aliant) so if 4 out of 5 customers are downloading movies or games using a Bittorrent which hogs a considerable amount of bandwidth, 1 out of the 5 users will find that the connection is slower.So unless your downloading movies for the purpose of making cash then I would not worry. I do remember a man in Northern NB get nabbed by the RCMP cause he was running a bootleg operation for pirated movies. One of his customers called the RCMP after complaining that he/she was sold a very poor quality DVD. :rofl:

...just wait until people switch to Vista... Microsoft has added features that block unverified 'protected content' from playing on your computer. Although I haven't checked indepth, I have no doubt that they will also include features that will keep track of where the protected content came from, and may even rat you out to the movie/music industry. (MS has been consulting with both industries while developing Vista on ways to combat piracy)....just a heads up :)

I heard it also won't let you copy DVD's (And isn't it Legal to backup your movies??) and it won't let you burn music CDs. This is what I heard.

Either way, I'm not touchin Vista with a 10 foot pole.

I hear ya...I already have a legit copy of Vista and have no intentions of installing it unless at some point I have to(like if they stop supporting Xp and new programs only work on Vista...)

Your right whoever mentioned that Rogers is pretty touchy with the bandwidth..I have talked to people who have been warned and threatened about bandwidth usage. I think this attitude is going to cost them customers in the long run. (I know its costing them one)

The guy who was busted pirating in Minto NB was actually making copies and selling them and that is illegal in canada and will get you arrested. He was NOT arrested however for downloading it.

If you download then they can get your IP.

In Canada there's nothing the RIAA (Not sure what the CDN version of this called) can do about it. They Recording Industry Association have taken it all the way to the Canadian supreme court and lost. They wanted to be able to force the ISP's to give you up. The ISP fought back and won. (They know who they're bread and butter is).

Funny side note - One large torrent site (based in sweden) is in the process of trying to purchase an island so they will be exempt from any laws.

another funny side note - The RIAA (Movie industry) tried to stop VCR's from being made and sold when they first came out years ago. Obviously they lost that fight as well. They have tried the same thing with other recording devices as well such as cd burners, etc.

I have a personal stance that I do not download music or movies, period. I don't think it is fair to the artist, you wouldn't go to the grocery store and take a box of cookies "just to try it out." It's a product, same as anything else. It's not a popular stance, but I don't care. In other areas I am no more or less law-abiding than anyone else, but for some reason this really is important to me that people not do this.
However, I would not be in favour of an O/S that would not let me do what I already did, take all my CD's that I legitimately own, and rip a few "power" songs from each one and burn them for a mixed CD for the gym. I had no intention of getting Vista, but I will think twice now before buying any new system.

Way I see it is if you can turn on the radio , and hear a song, what's wrong with downloading it to sample it. If you like it, buy the CD , if you don't then don't buy the cd. Seems pretty similar, I don't think people should get ever article of music they own from downloading it, but I do download some songs.

when I got to the bottom of the letter there was a link, and the link led to "to rectify this, you must purchase"...yadda yadda... it was an ad, a very long winded, official looking ad

I got the same email from rogers.. downloaded a movie for the kids (bad mommmy) they track ur IP address, they track everything.. Unfortunatly when u agreed to the "terms of use" u agreed to not do anything illegal.. ie.. download copyright material.. We are lucky were not like the states... no warnings, just lawsuits..
