I have a 10 month old who has acid reflux, I was wondering if anyone else had a little one with acid reflux. I'm looking for tips or different things to try when her stomach is bothering her. I'm also wondering what kind of symptoms other infants with reflux have.:)

I had a baby with acid reflux, he is now 16 months old and thankfully he has seemed to grow out of it. However when he was younger we used to have to give him Raninidine ( Zantac ) 3 times a day. Some things that we found helped him was elevating his mattress, other times if he would be really bad i'd heat up one of those magic bags so that it was just warm, not hot and i'd lay him on my lap and put it on his between his belly and his chest or, walk with him and have it between my chest and his. This seemed to really help him and get him to relax and be able to sleep. Occassionaly if we tried giving him some oval drops which seemed to help sometimes but not at all other times.

I really recommend the elevating the mattress and the heating bag though..worked great for us.

Good luck i know how frustrating it can be when your baby isn't feeling well!

Thanks for the advice:) My daughter also gets the hiccoughs quite often, and they last for 45 minutes too an hour, was this common with your son?

My son was recently diagnosed with Acid Reflux as well as a possible allergy to Milk, (he is 3 months old). My doctor opted not to give him the Zantac drops, instead he said to keep him elevated longer after a feeding (much like you or I would do to help with acid reflux).

Now, at the same appointment he put my son on Alimentium formula. and I swear he is a totally different child. He no longer spits up half his bottle after a feeding. He no longer screams and stretches due to the acid reflux.....I noticed a change immediately after his first bottle of this new formula. He actually relaxes so much when he is drinking his formula now that he sometimes falls asleep drinking it, instead of squirming and fussing.

I also notice that he doesn't get the hiccups as often as he was.

Ask your doctor if Alimentium would help? I was surprised to find out that it is a prescription formula so you don't have to pay for it.

My daughter too like your son has a milk alllergy, and also a soy allergy, but she is on a prescription formula called Nutramigen, which did help greatly! Less spitting, gas ect... But she still has the reflux spells.

My son had acid reflux, and he used to have the hiccups very often, for 20-30 minutes at a time. It sounds funny, but I used to wet my pinky finger and put a little bit of sugar on it, and put it at the back of his tongue. It worked most of the time. The doctor said that the hiccups were normal, but if they lasted more than an hour, to take him to the doctor. Hope this helps!

My newborn, Oliver [born 10 days ago] was diagnosed with acid reflux on Tuesday. He was assigned a doctor...Dr. Goodfellow...was on vacation at that time, so we had O'Connell, who said to elevate his upper body in the basinette & when feeding etc. It has helped, but he was not sleeping well in his basinette so for now [even though it's not a permanent fix] he's been sleeping in his car seat. We got between 6 & 7 hours of sleep last night!

We had another appointment today, this time Dr. Goodfellow was back. She seemed very informed about reflux & stated the first step is to try soy formula, which we've now started & that if it doesn't work the next step is Alimentum. It's sad that Alimentum [hypoallergenic] is paid for by public health, but soy milk due to cow's milk allergy etc. isn't covered.

Anyway, just a bit comforting to know we're not alone.

No, Nita, you sure aren't alone! I also did elevate my son's upper body for the acid reflux, and the same thing happened for me, he didn't sleep right in his bed after. However, when you are that sleep deprived, tomorrow night seems so far away! We went through this for 3 months with our son (he's 3 now and completely outgrown his allergies to milk, soy and rice) so, if you need to talk, feel free to PM me, I've been there and know it sure isn't easy!

My son was also allergic to cows milk. We used all Beech nut products, their labels are clearly marked, and their cereals have no milk product in them. He outgrew it at 16 months thanfully. He is 3 now and eats yogurt and cheese and can't get enough milk lol

Actually more of their cereals then not have milk in them, but this brand was easier to tell what allergen might be in the product. My daughter is 16 months and we are still struggling with her milk and soy allergy, although the soy has gotten better.

Hola ladies!

Wow. Surprised, but yet not, to see so many other mom's struggling with issues with their little ones.

Oliver is now almost 3 1/2 months old. Things have gotten better, but I think that has more to do with him growing up...less with anything we've tried. But things still aren't great.

He was put on Zantac & he was CRAZY on it. We stopped using it, as we feared he was having some of the side effects [headaches etc.] He was actually prescribed it reluctantly by Dr. Parais. He's been on SO many formulas...soy, Good Start, gentle, low iron...just to name a few. He's back to Alimentum, but that never really seemed to help his issues a whole lot. His doctor now says she doesn't think there is anything wrong with him & it's all developmental...& I feel like pulling my hair out. There's no way this can be developmental.

He's a fairly happy baby...when he's been fed, he's fairly content & smiley. But he spits up SOOO much, even hours after eating. He sometimes squirms & cries after going to bed, until he spits up & then he seems to feel relief. He doesn't burp well at all, seems to have constipation issues & can't really handle more than 6oz of formula. If he eats less than 3 1/2 hours after his last feeding, he basically vomits...like the formula from his last feeding hasn't even begun to digest. Lately he's gotten a bit worse & has gone back to projecting his spit-up. Not as far as he did as a newborn, but still, it's projecting.

Since he's gained weight wonderfully [he's probably almost 15lbs at 3 1/2 months] & isn't constantly crying, the doctors have said there's nothing wrong. But I hate seeing him spitting up so much & feeling sick when he goes to bed.

They're ruled out reflux [but who knows] & the doctor keeps saying that milk/soy intolerance & lactose intolerance are extremely rare in infants, so it's probably not that. I know Alimentum is lactose-free, but it still has milk in it.

We're at our wits end :/ I think we're going to call Dr. Parais' office again soon & see what more he can do, if anything.

My daughter is now almost 18 months, and we are still dealing with acid reflux. She is still getting Zantac, and she still has her milk and soy intolerance.
Nita, have you tried a formula called Nutramigen, it not soy, and everything in it is broken down for infants with cows milk intolerance.

livkat: We're on Alimentum, which is the same as Nutramigen, just made by a different company.

DH & I are starting to wonder if he has a gastrointestinal infection. First of all, he had some sort of infection in the hospital & because of that & jaundice, he was kept in the NICU for 3 days after I was discharged. They did not tell us what the infection was, but just kept saying the numbers were high & they wanted to watch it.

About a week ago he spit up & some of it landed on my hand. I didn't get the chance to wash it right away, because I was busy taking care of him, so I simply wiped it off. Within that day, I got this raised bumpy patch of skin right where the spit up had landed. Cut to a few days later & it was red, itchy, irritated & was even more irritated & itchy at night. It also seemed to be spreading. It was so gross, considering I'm a need freak & wash my hands like a maniac, so I wondered where it came from! The doctor said he hadn't a clue what it was exactly & told me to try several things...none of them seemed to be working.

Last night, I had this moment of clarity...they thought his infection when he was born might have had something to do with my water breaking & him being in there sans a lot of fluid for a day 1/2. So I started thinking...what if it was a yeast related infection? Then I looked this up & yeast is one of the things that can be related to a gastrointestinal infection in infants. Then I thought of my hand...& what can cause a rash etc. on the skin? yeast. Yeast also likes the warmth & dark....so under the covers at night would surely make it worse. I put some Canesten cream on the rash & almost instantly felt relief.

I plan to make an appointment with his doctor or with Parais to mention this & see if there's any way they can check for a gastro infection. I'd hate for him to have been suffering this whole time with something that would possibly be so easily treated.

Nita, I have to disagree with you, Nutramigen and Alimentum are not the same, they both have different ingrediants. I believe Nutramigen is easier to digest, and causes less bowel problems ( constipation ect..)
PS I hope you find out whats making your little one so uncomfortable!:)

Thanks livkat...

I'm not up on the ingredients for Nutramigen. I'm on a forum at infantreflux.com & many mom's said it's basically the same...but yes, some babies tolerated it better than Alimentum. Is that provided by public health as well?

He has an upper GI on the 28th. Hopefully that provides some answers.

Have any of you tried probiotics? especially if your child has ever been on an antibiotic or if you had them during birth. they can make a HUGE difference. We saw it with my son when he was an infant. Get them some acidophilus and you may be amazed with the difference.

Yes, we gave my son half of one tablet & he was in an insane amount of pain...a few hours later he was squirming & crying & then he had a huge strange looking poo. Not sure if that means it was cleaning out his system...but yeah, he seemed so uncomfy. We do talk about trying it again...maybe that was just a fluke.

my daughter puked from 10 mths until she was 17 mths constantly. I had her to her docter and the outdoor numerous times. I was soooo frustrated she power puked evrywhere is was so messy constantly cleaning all the time and never knew when it was going to happen. I took her back to her docters at 17 mths and demanded to see a specialist I was all done seeing my daughter in this abnormal state and pain. lol lo and behold after I demanded to see the specialist she said it could be only 1 of 2 things a block in her asophagaus or acid reflux. I was sooo angry after 9 months of puking, the docter tells me it could be 1 of 2 things, she could've told me that the first time I went there (10 mths old). Anywho so we went to the hospital and had an x-ray and her asophagaus was fine as she was gaining weight. So it was acid reflux. I was very sad in one way as my daughter had something I knew mothing about but, happy I finally knew why she was power puking. So she has been on ranidine for 9 months now and is very happy and no more vomiting.

Nita, how did your little one make out with the upper GI?

Sorry, just saw this.

Thanks for asking, btw.

Reflux showed up on the GI right away. He only drank 2 ounces of barium fluid & then refluxed. The doctor prescribed losec [aka prilosec] & there was a huge debacle with how it was made. The pharmacist was making it via a recipe on the Sick Kids hospital website, but the recipe was actually for tube fed babies. I called Sick Kids & was informed that they don't prescribe liquid compounds for infants with reflux & even if they did, the compound would have to be made VERY specifically so they choose to prescribe solutabs instead. The pharmacist basically didn't believe me & didn't seem to think it important to call Sick Kids & ask, so we were stuck paying $30 for an improperly compounded med that isn't even recommended for use. We tried for two days & our poor boy woke up every hour of the night screaming [when he typically sleeps through the night], so we stopped giving it to him.

I guess he just doesn't take well to meds [as Zantac caused the same screaming reaction].
