Odd, I've registered over 7 Vehicles more than twice each. They never ask, I guess I get the person that assumes a year.

I have to say, I have registered car every year for the last 16 years, and never have been asked either.It has always just been for 1 year.

You can register it for as long as you like. You are never asked because the majority registeres cars for a year. It does cost a lot more to register cars for a short time than for a full year.
