community access centers and the library are a good place to start, if you're in a pinch.

or a good friend.

by all rights, no reason you couldn't buy a perfectly good used P3 running OpenOffice for $100 or less - depending on the system specs and the seller.

If anyone did have a laptop they were willing to GIVE away, I think there are many more in need than yourself.

Of course, I am not totally informed of your financial situation, but...

If you can afford to travel - you can afford to buy a used laptop.

if you can find some parts and throw one together

there are a few groups around town that can help you

or get yourself a flash drive to save your work on

they are computer access centers the public library

etc.

The pioneers at nbtel aka aliant used to help people out

from time to time they have rooms full of systems that

don't work they just toss them in a corner most just need

a quick fix ram hdd switched etc...

I heard they had rooms with 1000's of laptops and they are just sititng

there..

The company I used to work with years ago..

We did all the renovation work @ nbtel and the nbtel tower buildings

We seen a room thousands of brand new laptops.....

still in boxes just sitting there....

They were to be upgrades for management and they never did

distribute them all maybe 1/3 of them the rest might still be

sitting there... If a hdd drives or a rom unit video card doesn't work

Instead of fixing it they just replace the computer.

Litterally rooms filled with computers and lots of good parts...

Maybe that's why Aliant charges so much for it's services :P

19 bucks for a P3 550 with 128mb of memory and a 6 gig harddrive. Total with tax and shipping would be less than 40 bucks and they do COD (cash on delivery) too, you just have to email them before hand. I've bought a few things from them before, customer service is great and the products always worked fine.
