We have nice deep lug winters on the truck , but it's laid up.
So we put winters all way around the van , this is our first time owning a van , hope it's fun to drive in the winter. Never owned a fwd before.
Always owned a truck...lol

Really..it should be law. Requiring winter tires for the season. I believe it is in some other provinces alrdy.
Some people may think all seasons are good in snow (I use to think that way as well)....but really there is no comparison to winter tires.
I'll never forget the one winter the mechanics had to push my car (I was driving it....it had good all seasons) into the bay in order to put the winters on. After they were on the car....I backed it out....turned around and proceeded to drive up a steep hill outta the parking lot. It made me a firm believer.

Studded winters here.

All season tires only here....have never used winter tires and have never had a problem.

I've never been in an accident, so does that mean I don't need to bother with seatbelts?

All season tires = no season tires. Bad in the rain, bad in the snow, bad bad bad

Always had all seasons, this year I have winter tires on my van. I dont have a preference for either. Both work as good I find - and I drive in snow and winter storms.

Good show! A lot of people think having AWD or 4x4 means they don't need winter tires. It's not true.

Awd & 4x4 give you more traction when you're trying to accelerate on snow or ice... ie when you are trying to get going. They also offer some advantage when you're trying to turn in the snow.

BUT:

Awd & 4x4 don't help AT ALL when it comes to slowing down or stopping in the snow. None. You still need good tires to stop.

That's one of the drawbacks with AWD & 4x4... they offer a false sense of security. You can get up to speed much easier, but you have no improvement with stopping distances.

Same goes for you folks with all season (read: no seaon) tires. Just because you are able to get out of your parking lot and drive down the road without getting stuck DOES NOT MEAN your tires are safe to be driving on. You'll learn that the hard way when you have to STOP in a hurry.

Trucks and SUVs are the worst for this. They are big and heavy, but with AWD or 4x4 they can get moving in the snow easily. But they can't stop. Ever notice which vehicles you see in the ditch after the first snowfall? Trucks, SUVs and minivans. Ever wonder why? they are Heavy, and they are difficult to maneuver and stop in the snow. But that's a whole other thread ;)

I have to agree 100% with Notfarnow, i had all season tires on my front wheel drive sunfire. Last wednesday night i almost died cause those tires have no traction on ice, ended up sliding across the road and rolling over a 10ft embankment....i blame the tires (was maybe going 50km/h). next winter when i have another car, it will have studded winters all the way around

Was your car the one in the paper where the front was all smashed in?

Studded winters on the car
Winters on the truck

I too once believed that all season were enough in the winter. Until a couple accidents with just a little bit of snow and both times technically the other guys fault. We then went to winters and last year got studded tires for the car to try them out. I got to tell you that studded tires are definitely the way to go and I will never go any other way again. What a difference between winters and studded winters, so much more control of your vehicle and no worries of sliding on the ice at all.

Nope, we have the all seasons..and they are aggressive ( trust me we can hear the noise). We also drive a 4x4 and we know how to drive it..So please do not lump all 4x4 people into the same pile, I am pretty tired of that.
You can get cheap tires, and better tires and even greater tires. Ours werent cheap, and they are pretty darned good.

I'm sorry, but all seasons just don't cut it. I had "good" aggressive all seasons that made tons of noise but NO TRACTION.

4x4 masks a lack of traction.... you have way more traction to GET GOING, so you feel confident. However... 4x4 gives you NO added traction for stopping.

But hey, don't take it from me. You'll learn soon enough when you have to stop NOW.
