Don't be afraid!! Do what it takes to protect you and your home. Where do you live? Sometimes the area in which you live plays a big role on how you react to a confrontation. For example, there are certain areas that by you calling the police than you would have to worry about the repercussions, such as windows broken, tires slashed etc. because they consider you a "rat". Now if you live in an area where they respect the law and what it is there for than you should be alright. Hopefully if you have good neighbours they will keep an eye on things for you. Best of luck to you, hope you have a good Christmas dispite the circumstances.

Get real.
The cop follows all the procedures that he is told to follow, so he can't do anything. And, then he's going on Christmas vacation, so he won't be doing any work while on vacation. That sounds resonable doesn't it?
Don't be so quick to blame the cop when he was following procedure, then not being able to follow up until Jan 2/08 because he is on vacation.
Would you like him to follow up while on his vacation? I'm sure you wouldn't want to do work while you're on vacation, now would you ?

I don't believe the officer was following procedure. Statement should have been taken the following day. You should have been told this! Futher more, the names of the individuals and other pertinant info. should have been gathered. Sounds like the officer was starting vacation early!

Did you try to defend yourself? Maybe if she got the snot kicked out of her, she may think twice before doing it to someone else, possibly even you again.
I would go to your neighbor and explain to them politely what happened and maybe they might give you names to give to police.
As far as the area you live in, thats crap. I live in an area where police live all around me, firemen, power linesmen, etc. Just 2 weekends ago, someone tried to steal my boyfriends ATV out of the back yard. My bike and a friends bike was untouched. The only reason they didn't get it because they couldn't get it started because the hand warmers were left on and it killed the battery. The key was still in the ignition as my boyfriend had planned to finish plowing later in the evening when it had stopped snowing, only to decide not to bother and forgot about the keys. The would be robbers still have the key, and I got surveillance up now, so I hope they do come back thinking they will get a bike out it...

If you live in the North End, or South End for that matter, and people know that you called the cops, they will call you rats, and than you have to worry about your personal possessions. So no, it is not crap, I have seen first hand innocent people who were trying to do the right thing and called the cops. They ended up having all their windows broken and were eventually forced out of the area.

I have heard of a guy getting stabbed for asking a group of teenagers to be quieter because they were waking his little girl. It definitely DOES matter which part of the city you live in.
There are a lot more immature people north and south. I love living in the south end though. The area I live in is great.

I had meant that there are always "reprecussions" that could follow due to reporting it to police - no matter where you live. There will always be people who do not abide by the law. Maybe I had read the post in question wrong, if I had, my apologies.
The same thing that happens in the North End, or South End happens on the West Side and the East Side too, maybe not as frequently, but it happens.
I have seen it first hand as well, I live West, see it all the time.

I think the main lesson here is that in this world today, you cannot expect people to be reasonable and say "ok, we'll quiet down". Chances are they were drunk/stoned or both.
The best course of action would have been to call the police and report the disturbance and leave it at that until the police show up. These days, taking something like this into your own hands is very dangerous. If you are not prepared/trained to properly defend yourself, stay inside.
Should we be able to go outside and say "Hey, can you keep it down a bit?", friggin' right we should be able to.......but we cannot, that's the world we have created.

Well if he did follow procedure.. (which i dont believe he did as he should have handed it off to another officer who was not on vacation), then its the "procedures" that are not in tact.. So they are basically saying that because someone had a few drinks during the night.. and becasue it took them 2 hours to respond to a violent attack, they cannot do anything.. ???
This is a violent attack on this woman and a threat on her life and home.. They SHOULD investigate, and something should be done.. I am sure it is too late now..
I wish you all the best for you and your husband.. It is absolutely disgraceful that this is what the world has come to.. Veru unfortunate that no one respects anyone but themselves nowadays..
Good Luck!

Excuse me but the area of town you live in does matter. I live in the north end close to the boulavards and I guarentee that if I called the cops on my neighbours they would retailate... Example, I called and reported the upstairs neighbours of smoking dope in the house with their 3 year old in there with them and blowing it down the dryer vent into my 1 year old daughters room. Guess what happened? The next day child protection was called on me! Another example (when I lived east), I called the cops and reported kids smashing house windows, car windows, and slashing tires. Someone found out it was me and low and behold that nite my living room window was smashed out with bricks and my moms car tires all 4 were slashed! So don't tell me that the area you live in doesn't play a part in it.
Though it sounds to me that the officer did follow procedure, except that he should have asked for the names of the people involved, or at least a discription, and a folow up should have been done the next day. Even if HE was on vacation, another officer should have followed up.
I really do not appreciate some people's comments that "thats saint john cops for ya" They work hard, they put their lives on the line every freakin day, they are at your beck and call 24/7. Until you walk a day in their shoes don't talk down about someone that may someday hold your life in their hands! Thanks!
p.s. I hope everything turns out ok for you and hubby and hopefully justice with prevail for you guys.

I think the officer(s) responded the way they did because they were not in a position to enter the other residence and as you said, you and your husband had also been drinking, so they could not know for sure who was the instigator, and lacking much of a physical description or other unrelated witnesses, they would waste their time looking for the suspects randomly. When I hear people fighting and screaming outside my house, I call the police and stay out of it; the only way I would get involved is if it seemed as if the fight was going to end in my property being damaged. If someone else was in danger, all I would do (and have done) is offer the person being attacked the chance to come inside where it was safe.

I would have gone back inside and got a bat or something appropriate for this. I've been in these situations before and if you come out swinging this tends to make them back off, although you better be prepared to go the distance.
