Anyone know what the average wait time is to get a layaway out at Walmart? They have a sign posted that says to expect 1 1/2 - 2 hour wait, but was wondering if anyone has been out and if that is accurate.

My son-in-law went last Friday night aroud 10:00 and he was out of there around 10:45.The only reason for this was because they misplaced an item.So he could have been out of there by 10:30.
Another daughter went last night at 7:05 and was told it would be about half hour. She went back about 40 minutes later and told them she would be back in 15 minutes and it was there then.

I was out there on Friday, Nov 30 at 9:30 am... overall the store was busy but not crazy.
Only 3 people ahead of me in layaway lineup.. so I decided to wait, they said they would page my name on the store speakers when ready.
I returned to the desk after 30 minutes of shopping thinking it would be there - it wasn't so I waited near the layaway desk.
In total I waited almost one full hour for them to retrieve my one-bag layaway from another storage location somewhere in the store.
That was long for me then ... hate to see what it is now :(

What is the point of layaway?

What is the point of layaway?

They put the item aside and you can make payments on it until it's fully paid. Useful for gifts you find early in the year or if you can't afford the whole price at the time.

Although why are there wait times?

Might also be useful when you have snoopy kids (or spouses) at home who would go through your closet/basement etc trying to find gifts.

Layaway is only 30 days I believe. I was there yesterday morning around 830am and didn't have to wait at all. Part of the reason I went as soon as I dropped my daughter off at school. :)

I used to do layaways every year at Walmart for Christmas gifts but found the wait to be extremely long and would get very annoyed after waiting so long just to be told that they lost part of my layaway. I will use the layaway department during the year but just not at Christmas

I have an xbox 360 on layaway there, my first time ever using layaway...and it took me a half hour just to get to the counter and put the payment on it...that was last friday...i go to pick it up on the 21st, and I think i will go at like 3 in the morning so i will not have to wait forever...

I think you can make payments on your layaways in the regular checkouts, at least you could before and I don't think the layaway dept is open 24hours...usually only till 9 or 10pm.

Just an FYI.. If it is for Xmas.. All Layaways have to be picked up before the 17th. Even if you only put it on Lawaway like 2 weeks ago..
Mine was originally supposed to be held until dec 22nd.. and then they asked if it was for xmas.. Then told me i had to pick it up by the 17th.

Another FYI would be if you have something in layaway that is hard to get (ie video games etc) there is a good chance that when you go to get it they can't find it. I have seen people flipping out on more than one occassion because this has happened.

We went out after midnight and it looked like it was close. We didn't bother stopping, we drove by the door but the lights were dimmed and their sign was out. There were people there waiting for drives but it looked like they had closed up.

Walmart was open 24 hours on Friday, closed at 11pm on Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday. They reopen I think it was 7am Monday and don't close again till Saturday at 11pm.

ok...so are they prejudice against christmas or something? Why would I have to get it out by the 17th? They did not say anything to me about it, and I am not going until the 21st. Why would it matter? What if I wanted something for myself and wanted it out on the 21st?

It may just be a end of the year policy for inventory or something.

Could also be that sometimes people change their minds about a layaway...or don't pick it up...maybe still want it but can't afford it...various reasons....

By putting a date such as Dec 17 on all layaways anything that isn't picked up can be put back on the shelf and they have basically a week (close to it) to sell the items....

I suppose with it being end of year....christmas...they have many reasons why they have a cut off date....

lizard_lover
12-18-2007, 10:54 AM
well they told me I had until the 8th of january...

JustWatching
12-18-2007, 11:02 AM
oh well if that is what they told you then you must have till Jan 8 - I know it used to be there was a cut off date....maybe they've changed that....it should actually state the date of pickup on your receipt....

yeah it says if I do not pick up by january 8th, they will put it back on the shelf. I can understand them wanting to have a majority of xmas stuff picked up by a certain date though...near christmas will be crazy!

Snoopy spouses, has a nice ring to it.
My father was the biggest kid when it came to Christmas, my mother had to hide his gifts in my toybox in my closet or he would find them "accidentally"- yeah, accidentally on the back of the shelf in their closet under a pile of dress scarves or on the closet floor between the steamer trunk and the wall- the man never put away his own clothes so how he "found" anything in the closet was suspicious.

If thats the case then they must not have asked you if it was for Xmas.. My original date was the 23rd or something like that.. and they asked if it was for xmas.. I said yes.. and they said o u have to pick it up by the 17th.. I would call to check.. but if they didnt cross out your orig date.. then you should be fine..

I may not open my mouth.. Just in case.. LOL
Up to you.. I just thought i would let u know what i went through..
Have a Merry Xmas..

They are just being thoughtful. They don't want a wrapping paper shortage on the 24th. :)
