I currently have Aliant Hi-Speed which is roughly 1.5mbps down and 480 or 640kbps upload *think they slowed it down*.

I like to read newsgroups (usenet) even though ROGERS deems them outdated and useless and has discontinued their free access to a usenet server as part of their internet package.

Aliant still has news.aliant.net available for free to their customers.

My questions is, could someone with Rogers Hi-Speed try that usenet/newsgroup server and see if they can access it freely?

If it is possible, then I'm probably going to switch to Rogers.

For nearly the same money, Rogers is offering 7.0mbps down and 512kbps up. That's a lot faster than Aliant, esp. since I think Aliant has decreased their upload speed from 640kbps to 480 or 512kbps.

Please let me know. I'll be watching this thread.

502 news.aliant.net: Access denied to your node - support@aliant.net

PS the 1.5Mbps service from Aliant is only 256k Upload.

I upgraded from Aliant 1.5mbps HiSpeed to Aliant 5.0mbps HiSpeed. It is very fast. I get 620 Kbyte/s downloads and my upload speed maxes out at around 60 Kbyte/s, which is the same as the 1.5mbps HiSpeed flavour. It's perfectly fine for me at this point.

The plus is that I keep my own nbnet email address and free access to usenet!

Cheers.
