A couple things I would suggest right off would be a 20% water change every few days, check the ph/nitrate/ammonia levels and don't keep the tank light on too long.
That worked for me much better than spending more cash on getting the algae chemicals to reduce it. Plus once I realized we were overfeeding the fish it was causing extra buildup in the tank.
The freshaquarium.about.com link has some good tips.. hope some of that helps, it worked for me.

If your tank is close to a window it will turn green as well. As long as it is there you will have algae. The build up is where the most light is coming in. You may want to move it to another place in the home. When mine does that I just clean it off. Also cut back the time you have the light on. Hope this helps.

I've never tried the snails, they may do a good job. I'd research online before checking the petstores though... just to be sure you have the right info before spending the cash on them. Been there several times being convinced by pet store staff that a certain fish works or is a good breed to purchase then to find out they weren't very educated in their field :(
Too much light either from a window or the light in your tank will grow lots of algae. Try keeping the light off for half the time and or move it away from the window. After you clean it you can also get something called P Clear and it helps to cean up the water. I have to use it in my tank from time to time.
