View Full Version : win xp install freezes, linux does not

ive tried this several times now with multiple versions of windows, but everytime i try to install it on my pc it freezes at random, but when i throw linux on there it works great, im actually using the pc withlinux right now, no freezes or nothing, any idea's?

It could be your Windows disk causing the issue. Are you able to complete the install or does it freeze during the install?

u have a bad device on the ide line, just have the cdrom and hd , try this works for me

ya i think my hd may be crapping out, i put in in a dell pc to see if i could install with a diff mobo and diff ram, but dells hd monitoring system just nagged at me saying it was going bad, ran spinrite on it and no probs, but not sure what else, the hd ran fine wit vista on it, just slow as hell casue i only had 384mb ram, but no freezes

Maybe try a different IDE Cable, like a brand new one if any are lying around from upgrades. I find cables can cause some screwy problems.

Other than that, could be Mobo or RAM. Try Memtest86 as Kaj27 suggested (Memtest86+ is on the Ubuntu Linux Live CDs), or also try clearing the CMOS/resetting back to defaults.

If you suspect the drive is dying, maybe check with the manufacturers diagnostic program (there are CDs like Hiren's Boot CD or Ultimate Boot CD, http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/, that have numerous diagnostic programs) or also check it with Seagate's Seatools program. (Seatools usually will scan any drive, but can only repair Seagates.)
