ddr and ddr2? mine's a ddr would a ddr2 be compatible?

DDR and DDR2 are different technologies and aren't compatable, no. DDR has 184pins and DDR2 has 240pins, and is also designed to run at much higher speeds, as well as a few other advancements.

Some boards (Intel Only) may have both DDR and DDR2 slots on board, but they should never be used together(if that's the case though, upgrading to DDR2 would be best). If you have an AMD system, the way the memory controller is built into the CPU, you can only use DDR. The only way to move to DDR2 is to buy a new Motherboard and CPU both.

Unless the chip is AM2. Which uses the DDR2 RAM type.

True, but it's already been established that the original RAM is DDR.

Just the way you worded it sounded like you were stating that all AMD systems use DDR.
