I am thinking of going wireless with my internet.

I am wondering why people flash their router.

I am interested in a linksys WRt54G router and see where you can flash third party firmware onto it.

What does this accomplish? Why would a person do it? Any other info provided would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

People will do this to fix any bugs the router may have. I personally only recommend using the Manufacturers firmware for the router. Third party's put out the updates as well but sometime they are corrupt and can cause damage. Some ppl use the third party flash because the advertisement for it makes it look like it tweaks the speed or something along that lines but in the end it really doesn't.

I beg to differ.

I have used many 3rd party firmwares and I've never had any issues with them, and I have also expanded wireless range with them.

They also can offer more functionality.

However, if you have never flashed something before - find someone who is more comfortable in doing it.

Depending on what version of the wrt54g you have, the flash process can vary.
