Does anyone know how much money these Chinese students are bringing in to Saint John?? It's amazing that we still live in a society that being different as in religion, race will get you beat up.
I would like to say that this random act of violence does not represent Saint John and its citizens. I also hope that the perpretrators get what they deserve. :(

That is a real shame. Not to generalize but any of the Chinese students I have ever met were unbelievably kind and polite. :(
Weapons charges? It kind of sounds like a hate crime since they were being targeted. :(
In my opinion our youth need more education about their culture because reality is they are here and contributing to our economy(I think it's great I love diversity). Plus how wonderful is it to experience other cultures and to learn about our differences. It helps you to grow as a person.
In high school there should be an entire class dedicated to tolerance of race and religion in my opinion.:)

there are some people that dont like international students because they think that they are here to take over our city and our jobs. we had international students living with us at one time for 2 years.. from BHUTAN they were great and quite.. and sometimes they help my son with his home work.
maybe they should lock up that 19 year old in china..lol

I think the hate crimes thing is pending further investigation. They would have to put together a lot more evidence to have that go through in court. That is probably the reason why the SJ Police have put the Major Crimes Unit on the case. They've said that they are exploring more charges but haven't said what those are so I can only assume.

The sad thing is this is actually something that happens more often than not. These chinese kids unfortunately do not report these incidents as they are afraid of the police. However, they have been told by local police that they should report such incidents and they don't have to fear the authorities.
Let us refer to the victims as Asian. There are a lot of Malasian, Vietnamese, Korean (etc) people in the city too. I'm sure the Chinese haven't been singled out in this Hate Crime.
The Violent, Braindead, Racist Saint Johners doing this get confused easily, so they need to direct their hate on people who visibly look different. I'm sure their categorization streams from one person they didn't like or from Exaggerated stories told to them from their grandparents....

Well, the news reports say the victims are Chinese so how about we call them Chinese since that is what they are. Asia is a pretty big continent and could mean a lot of different people.

The local redneck idiots are justifiably afraid that they will lose their job to these students, the ones I used to work with had the work ethic that too many North Americans have lost- they show up on time, never call in sick just because they don't feel like coming in, always try to get everything done right, they don't show up hung over and they are always willing to do other work. These yokels need to understand that they are not going to go away, our university worked hard to attract these students so they could make money and have a more diverse student body so that our home-grown students could have a chance at competing successfully in the global market, because in order to work with others you need to understand how they think.

Wait a minute Trin! You're attacking another 'group' of people here, no, I don't call myself 'redneck' but the people I know who embrace that label are for the most part honest and genuine folk, they carry no more bigotry than some 'open-minded' people, 'Christians', 'yuppies', 'hippies', etc.
Bigotry, hatred, and violence knows no racial/gender/ethnic boundaries.

wow...I am so disgusted...I actually have a couple friends who are foreign (chinese) that are here for university...I just read that news report....and am disgusted to say I dated the older one...long time ago...makes me feel sick to my stomach...he was always a jerk and rude and said things that were bad about different races (which was why I broke up with him to begin with) but I never thought it would get this bad...seriously what were they thinking? The world is for us to share....we should not have certain places "reserved" for certain races....this is just grossing me out...I have to go get a drink now before I freak out...

I believe she is referring to those in particular who target these individuals and not all of us Saint Johners as a whole.
I do hope the judge makes a stern example out of those who are guilty. Perhaps a chicken suit and jail time is in order?

Now I'm worried. I'm studying @ Memorial U, but I'm here for the summer. I'm Malaysian-Chinese, raised in Vancouver. This is the first I've heard of any such incidents...guess it's time to start being more careful. Frankly, I was surprised, Saint John is a pretty welcoming city. One would expect to see these things more in a more dangerous place like NYC.

Overall, it is safe. If you look at the operative word, all attacks were done in the "early hours of the morning." Late at night, walking in a somewhat isolated area like UNBSJ can be a dangerous time for anyone of any nationality. When I went to UNBF back in the early 1990s, we were advised to not walk near campus late at night alone either. It also occurs to me that for the most part, you would not find local Canadian students actually WALKING, they would most likely either have a car of their own or take a cab right to their door whereas most of the foreign students are much more accustomed to walking everywhere, would not own a car due to not having a Canadian license, or would not take a cab due to financial issues.

I don't think you have anything to worry about - it is far less dangerous a place than Vancouver.

I do not want this to sound badly, but I think where you are from this country and familiar with the language and customs you probably would not be targeted. The fear of police and language barriers probably made the other victims seem like easy targets.
I think it is very important that they police do talk to the students who are from China and afraid of them. And let them know that harassment can be reported before it even gets to physical violence. As I said I am hoping the judge makes an example out the guilty. I really really do. We need to stand up and say No we are not going to allow this in our society and our little town.

Have been reading the thread, but refraining from replying, till now :) This sort of thing happens in this city DAILY! Especially to Asians! No idea why this city is like this, but it is. I know this for a fact, as I have a very close family member, who is of mixed race. Age has no factor, I have seen it, the victim & the harasser, anywhere from age 5 to 65. I think in "general" we are a safer city than Vancouver. However when it comes to racism, it WILL be experienced in this city FAR more than Vancouver. I have lived in Vancouver in the 80s & again a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, I have seen the racism & harassment that my family member has experienced in Saint John.
Agreed picking on people because of the way they look is abhorent.
Folks who do this are "Chavs" and this is how they should be dealt with <tongue in cheek>:

Racism is in this city more than people think. I go to the university and this isnt the first time it has happened. A couple years ago there was a number of asian students getting egged along with middle easter people. When i moved back to Saint John I had 3 different people tell me to take my mixed (instert N word here) baby back to where she belongs. We have always been a predominently white province and unfortunatley it has driven many foreign students to wanna go to places like Toronto, Van and montreal where they are more accepted. Wouldnt you?
I have seen way to much racism in this city and i just wish i could pin point why exactly saint john is so against cultural diversity. I even heard some people on the bus bashing the new asian store on king street. Grow up people

I am shocked, I never realized how pervasive prejudice can be. I was just chatting online with some people I have chatted with off and on over the years, some of them since the 1990s, they are mostly Americans with the occasional Aussie and mentioned that I was interested in maybe going to teach English in China now that I have been "restructured" into unemployment. You know what one of them said "Yuck! They are trying to kill us and our kids!" -referring to the tainted lead paint on some toys and the contaminated toothpaste. Like no American factory ever let out anything tainted, nope, no cat food, seafood, spinach, chili, packaged salads, etc. Wow! What an eye-opener! It never occurred to me to blame a whole race for one or two factory's mistakes.

yeah really eh? I am part of a couple of reptile forums online that are mostly american users...and they were going on about how foreigners were invading their country, and that they were tired of seeing "dirty non belongers" on the street, and they should all be burned and tossed back to where they came from...I was so bothered by that I reported the site and cancelled my membership...just goes to show you what some people are like

Know what? they need to wake up and smell their minority status, 1.3 billion Chinese alone, 1.2 billion Indian and Pakistani, .9 billion or more in the African continent, another billion comprised of other Asian nations-Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Phillipines, and Middle eastern countries, ... the list goes on. I just did a Wikipedia calculation and at least 72% of the world's current population is non-Caucasian-maybe more, my finger got tired of punching buttons on the calculator. And 94.98 % of the world's population does not live in USA/Canada.

It's not just the Americans that think this way. Scroll down to the bottom of this article and read the comments posted by the UK public:
