I was wondering if anyone knows anything more about skating rinks in Saint John. I have the City Of Saint John website and phone number with schedules etc, but all it talks about is free public skating and senior skating, and my questions are this:
1. Is there such a thing as PAID public skating anywhere? I would be willing to pay to go when less people were around, as I am essentially a beginner and cannot let go of the boards.
2. What qualifies as "senior"? I am 37 but would not be bringing any kids. I would love to go when peoples kids are in school as (no joke) I am kind of afraid of running into a small child or falling on one, and at size 26, that would not be good for a 60 lb child. Maybe if I just show up for the "senior skate" they would let me in? Or does senior just mean adult? (i hope i hope)

I don't know much about the rinks, but I can't see you getting turned down at the senior skate, If they ask any questions, just tell them what you told us, that you are just learning and would like to come at a time where there are no kids to skate around ect.
If that doesnt work get a grey wig :)

I've emailed them-it doesn't seem fair that they have special skate times for parents with toddlers (Tiny Tots) and seniors, and nothing in between. What am I, chopped liver? :-0

I guess they probably wouldn't have a really big turnout if they had a special skat for 30 year olds lol i guess generally people in the middle are bringing kids with them (or being drug to the rink by their kids)
I'd like to start skating again please post what you find out.

on the subject, does anyone know if you can rent an arena by the hour? In case people want to play a friendly game of hockey?

Yes, you can, contact leisure services for the City. I think it is $130.00/hr.

It is possible to rent ice time, but it's extremely hard to get times, especially this time of year. If you are interested in playing pickup, both my father and brother have pickup games, and have had their ice booked since September...If you want more info, you can PM me.Although many of the players pay up front for a session, they always seem to have a few spaces available for people who just want to show up now and again (although those spaces are first come first serve!)

@2:00 weekdays when kids are in school LBR .You'll be all by yourself. i went with my 3 year old and we were alone. And don't be afraid to go out on the senior skate at the gorman . Maybe a half of dozen to a dozen people. Friendly.
Also the toddler skate at the gorman. Might get four or five with parents. I am sure they wont kick you out. 2:00

Got an email back from the city saying they are looking into setting up an "adult" skate time, but in the meantime, I could go to the senior skate if I wanted as there are not many people taking advantage of that skate time. I'm going to try the public skate this afternoon and see how it goes, there are 3 times: 230 at the Gorman, 415 at Peter Murray, and 5 pm at the Stu Hurley.

there is an outdoor rink in quispamsis where the bank of montreal is located. I don't no what the ice would be like with the sun that were getting. good place to skate when the kids are in school.

True-I just chickened out at the Gorman, there were too many cars in the parking lot. I think I will wait til tomorrow when all the rug rats are trapped in school :-)

FYI, I went during senior skate and.. I have completely forgotten how to skate. As I dragged myself around the boards, I saw a sign on them advertising hockey classes etc including "learn to skate." So I called them and finally got through the busy signal and left a message asking if they teach adults, because man, I could really us a chair, a walker, two people holding me up on either side. whatever.

well I went to the rink in the west side belyea? I took my son to toddler skating, only a few really tiny kids learning to skate, maybe thats the skating for you? (no insult) just meaning it was all beginners and they allow chairs.

No offense taken, I had to hold the boards with both hands. I pulled myself around about twice and got such bad cramps in my arms and back that I had to stop (probably from the bent-over, pulling motion). They haven't called me back yet, hopefully they do. I hope the "Learn to Skate" people take me seriously, because my dream is to someday go to New York in the winter and skate at Rockefeller center. (and they don't have ANY boards :-)

Well, they just called me back and they can't help me. Any suggestions? Anything at all? Or did I just throw away a hundred bucks on new skates? Holy frustrating day batman!

To learn you just have to go out and do it like the toddler skating there is nobody there, you just have to fall down alot, I know I did when I was learning. There is no shame in holding onto the boards with two hands for dear life.

I don't care about falling, but I got such severe cramps in my arms and back from holding onto the boards that I had to leave. I don't know, my roommate takes some OTC medication for back pain that has muscle relaxant in it, I'll just buy whatever he uses and pop a few before I go skating I guess. Robaxacet I think?
