He could've gotten stressed out from the new fish. That's a big reason why other fish die.

When you cleaned the water, did you do a full water change or only half? How much did you feed once you got the new ones? Did you research to see if the new ones would go ok with your big one? What are the water temps? Were you constantly touching the tank since you got the new ones? How big was he, and what else is in the tank? What breed of fish were they? Cichlids, tetras, gouramis, betas, barbs, etc...? I need to know more about the situation to help determine why he died...

I don't know what kind of fish you had, but I have a Goldfish have had it for 5 years now. Let me just say that this has been my experience and it worked - I am not diagnosing, I am not a Vet and your situation may or maynot be the same.

Sometimes they get this thing where they start floating on their side, and swimming weird, like in circles etc. I had asked around but no one knew what to do. I went online and found my answer. There is an air sack that helps the fish to float. Some how once in a while the air sack gets messed up and if you don't tend to it - the fish will die. Always have frozen peas handy. When the fish starts with this behavior - just take 1 or 2 of the peas and pour boiling hot water over them to thaw them and do it a second time to soften then. Let them cool then "Pinch" the pea, so the outside hard husk comes off. Make sure it is all off, as it could make the fish worse. Make sure the pea splits in two - then push the pea in the fish's mouth and get him to swallow it. You may have to pour water over his mouth. Yes you will have to take him out - obviously you have to work quickly. If he won't swallow it - what I did was mash the pea into a paste and feed that to him. Sometimes they will just eat it on their own - but they are likely stressing and not thinking about eating. The Point is: the pea gives them diareah (??) like symptoms, and after they are done with that it usually relieves enough air out of body so they straighten up and are ok after that. As a preventative, just feed them a pea every once in a while !!

I have never heard of that to cure swim bladder problems, but always good to know. If your fish was 3 years old (depending on what type of fish) it may just have been his/her time to go. I am also thinking that if you do not even know the type of fish, you probably were not giving accurate care for the species...some require heaters, special vitamins, special care...some can only go with certain fish, etc...
