Does it have to have an official adapter and memory stick to turn on? i tried it with another adapter and no power(will not turn on) any ideas?

The psp does not need to have the memory stick in it to be turned on or the adapter. Unless the battery is completely dead then yes you will need the adapter as a power source.

Superstore is clearing out a bunch of electronics, I saw some PSP power adapters there.
