Just thought some of you would like to know that I was sitting in the legislature yesterday and the government announced a rebate on property taxes for those that make less than $20,000 a year. This has absolutely nothing to do with those on welfare, hence you cannot own property on welfare.

Just thought everyone would like to know that they are finally doing something for the poor working class.

I've always been curious.. would a rebate of $200 on property taxes result in $200 cash in your pocket? Or would it just be lsomething similar to being able to claim an extra $200 on your taxes at the end of the year?

The working poor have long been on the very bottom of any government's priority in the past decade or so.

Only problem I can see there is how many people making under $20,000 can afford there own home? I wouldn't think there would be very many.

good point oasis. There are a few, I'm sure, but more middle class people could benefit from this as well. It's the people who make 25,000 to 35,000 that suffer the most. They don't qualify for any rebates and get taxed to death too so their take home pay is lower.

fyi - I'm not in that tax bracket and have nothing to gain or lose by saying this.

It should still apply, but you would be wise to double check with a mortgage holder to make sure it's been deducted. Sometimes things tend to fly under the radar..purposely or not. It's always wise to check.
Further to the subject of owning a home @ 20K or less. Anything's possible, but probably not in Saint John. The property tax and water bills would choke you.
