I need some advice, please.

Is there any harm to a growing baby if you have a moderate fever (100.7F) at 11 weeks pregnant? Also having a sever cold.

Does anyone know?

Please no rude comments. removed

Thank you

Are you keeping fluids and food down? I think it is safe to take tylenol while pregnant. It was when I was preggers and that was just about a year ago (they change things a lot though, I swear). Maybe you should call Tele-care and consult them.

Here is some info I found on MSN Health Canada about fever, it does not mention anything about being pregnant, but does give some helpful info. I will search and see if I can find something more specific to pregnancy.

In most cases, fever can be managed without seeing a doctor. However, if there are symptoms other than fever that are bothersome, a health care professional should be contacted. Consult a doctor if:
a child below the age of three months has a temperature of 38ºC (100.4°F)
a child has a fever of 39°C (102.2°F) or greater
an adult has a fever of greater than 40.5°C (104.9°F)
a child or adult with a history of cancer, AIDS, or other serious illness such as heart disease or diabetes has a fever
fever is accompanied by:
headache, stiff neck, confusion
shaking chills, burning or pain with urination
shortness of breath and cough
localized pain, redness, or swelling
the fever remains high after an hour or two despite self-treatment
the fever has not gone away in 2 daysIf you see your doctor about a fever, they will take a medical history - asking about symptoms, prior diseases, medications, and recent travels. Usually, it's easy to find a specific cause for a fever. If a specific cause can't be identified, additional tests may be performed.
Your doctor may want to know the following about a fever:
how long the fever has lasted
if the fever is worsening or getting better
if there are chills
if the fever is going up and down
if it came on suddenlyAfter asking detailed questions, your doctor will also perform a physical examination to look for an infection or signs of a disease. Your doctor may check the blood for white blood cells, and may check the urine or sputum. Other tests that may be done include x-rays and ultrasound.
Treatment and Prevention

When body temperature is greater than 40°C (104°F), and is prolonged, here are a few things someone can do for relief until the fever breaks:
drink plenty of fluids (water) to compensate for fluid loss from sweating
get plenty of rest
remove extra blankets and clothing so heat can leave the body and help lower the body temperature (but don't take off all the clothes as that can can lead to shivering and make body temperature rise again)
sponge the body with lukewarm water, which may help reduce fever (although it can cause children to feel uncomfortable)Since fever protects the body from injury or infection, doctors generally only treat fevers above 39°C (102°F) in children, and above 38.5°C (101°F) in adults. However, fevers in children less than two months old should be reported to a doctor immediately. If a child between two months and three years has a fever over 39°C (102.2°F), or over 38.5°C (101°F) that has lasted 24 hours, contact a doctor immediately. Between three and six years of age, children can have a fever for 48 hours, and in school-age children 72 hours, before it needs medical attention.

I found this on ivillage by Peg Plumbo, CNM
Fever during pregnancy
http://a820.g.akamai.net/f/820/822/1d/i.ivillage.com/shared/templates/qa/Q2.gif I am 28 weeks pregnant and unfortunately contracted an influenza virus. I have all the common symptoms, such as running nose, sore throat, etc. How does a fever affect my unborn baby?

http://a820.g.akamai.net/f/820/822/1d/i.ivillage.com/shared/templates/qa/A2.gif I consulted M. Paul's book: Occupational and Environmental Reproductive Hazards. She says that when maternal core temps reach 102 degrees F. (38.9 C. or greater) there have been reports of abnormal fetal development. Fevers this high occurring during the period of neural tube closure (days 20 to 28 after conception)have been associated with a significantly increased incidence of central nervous system related defects.
Studies of influenza epidemics in Europe in the 1950s and 1960s reveal a 2-3 fold increase in congenital anomalies among infants born to women with sustained fever episodes in the 1st trimester. No infants exposed to high temps after 16 weeks gestation (18 wk by LMP) had malformations. There were no stillborn or premature births reported. All fevers were above 102 degrees and these were sustained for 1 or more days.
In another study, no association was found between febrile episodes and incidence of birth defects or problems with the pregnancy. "Other prospective and retrospective studies failed to find a significant association between hyperthermia due to influenza in early pregnancy and abnormal pregnancy outcomes" (M. Paul).
At 28 weeks, you are beyond the sensitive period anyway, so I would feel confident that no harm has been done.
Fever can safely be lowered in pregnancy through the use of tylenol or tepid baths. http://a820.g.akamai.net/f/820/822/1d/i.ivillage.com/shared/iv/end_slug.gif

I would strongly recommend calling call Tele-care. It's not so much the fever that can do harm but what is your body fighting that's causing the fever. It may be absolutely nothing more than a cold but it may indicate something else and you'd want to be sure. Fever is the body's way of getting rid of something nasty creeping around inside you.
Good luck and I hope it's really just a cold :D

Hi everyone,
I took tylenol and the fever broke. I feel like crap though. I have 2 small children who wouldn't go to bed tonight which drove me nuts. Thank you so much for all of your responses. I am going to sleep and call telecare tomorrow. We will se how the night goes. Hopefully the fever won't come back. Basically what I have read online is if the fever only lasts for just a day there shouldn't be any problems, but if it last longer then that their could be complications. It has been a day. I will let you all know what telecare says. I would go to my doctor but it always takes at least a week to get in. Sucky.
Again thank you all and good night.

Regular tylenol is ok, not sure about the stuff for cold and flu though :( I was 17 when I was pregnant for my first, and am now pregnant for my second and tylenol is still ok. Just take in lots of fluids. :( I hope you feel better soon. I had the flu when I was pregnant with my first child almost a month.

With my middle baby, I had migraines for 6 weeks straight starting when I was 3 months and they actually gave my Tylenol 2 and told me to use it only when absolutely necessary because of the codeine. That doctor thought it was better to have me feeling well, as the pain caused the baby stress. I took the regular Tylenol as much as needed and she was fine. I took it for all 3 pregnancies (89, 92 & 97) but never, ever cold medicine.
I hope the Tylenol works for you tonight & your other babies sleep like they were kissed to sleep by angles and let you sleep.

Tylenol is okay to take. Man there is nothing worse than feeling under the weather and having to take care of young ones. I sure hope you get a good nights sleep and the wee ones do too. They say there is always a reason for a fever and I hope it is not to serious for you.Take care of yourself!

I use to sing my kids rock a bye baby and add a line at the end:
Rock a bye baby in the tree top
When the wind blows the craddle will rock
And when the bow breaks the craddle will fall
And down will come baby craddle and all
And then a bright angle, all dressed in white
Will love you and hug you all through the night.

Baby falling from a tree always sounded so sad...

today was the worse day of my life!!! i was playing in gym today and not everyone in there knows that i am pregnant,(not showing) and we were playing capture the chicken, so me trying to be careful guarded the chicken. when my back was turn on of the guys on the other team tackled me from behind!! And he doesnt know (well he does now) i was in horrible pain and didnt want to show it. when the guy came at me again i sat down on the grass and clenched my stomach. he thought i was faking but seen me crying. I dont like the guy and he hates me but he was so nice when i told him i was pregnant and thought i was miscarrying, he took me back up to the school to see if i was alright, he even waited outside of the girls washroom for me. The whole way to the school i was crying and i told the guy not to worry i wasnt mad. My worse nightmare came true! the tackle from behind shock the fetus up so bad that i had miscarried the baby. i told the guy and he went and told my boyfriend what happened, no one was mad at him, but i think he is mad at himself. he told me when i feel better i can bet him up but i dont think i will and i dont think im going to get pregnant again for a while...at least not while i am in school. :(:(:(

Go to the hospital asap. you can't just self diagnos that, and you may need treatment.

We did that after i told the guy, he has a car so he said he'd drive us up there and he would go back to school and tell our teachers. He did and by the time i was done my boyfriend and the guy who tackled me were standing there talking. the guy the did it felt so bad he got me a teddy bear and took me and my bf to his house to eat.(i didn't really feel much like eating, but i did anyway):o The doctors gave me some meds and stuff to flush out my system and i have to go to the Merc next Friday for a Pap test to make sure EVERYTHING is ok. I was just in a lot of pain, :o the guy was so worried about me walking to his car, he was so sweet. pity how we hate each other lol :p he drove us home too. I just hope he doesnt say anything tomorrow about it to me, i told him to keep quiet.

They should have kept you in, you may be in shock. I would advise you to see a specialist to make sure that this didn't effect your ability to have children in the future. I would not be in a rush to have children either as they are a lifetime of responsibility. Say good bye to everything you enjoy about being young and "free". As you know I have two kids and am young, it is a joy, but I am aware there are things I could have been doing in my twenties I am missing out on. I will only be 40 and my kids will be 20, but please do not rush into having a baby.

You have no idea what you are in for until that baby is here, trust me.

Sweet, sweet child. My heart is literally ripping out for you. Are you in high school? This is going to be really hard for you and the fellow that hit you is probably feeling so guilty. You're not going to go to school tomorrow? Rest and rest some more!! This is very traumatic on your body and it needs time to recover. So does your broken heart. I've never lost a baby but thought a couple times I was pregnant & then found out I wasn't. If that hurt, I can't imagine even a little bit how you feel. I'll pray for you tonight!!! If you are up to it, keep us posted. :')

We got to the hospital at around 20 after 11 . and we didnt get outta there until almost 5... i got home to my house at about 6:30 7:00. they did a lot of test and i am surprised i didnt pass out at the guys house.lol i was pretty pre occupied i think, looking at all his football stuff.and he was told to keep asking me if i was alright. i sleep in the car on the way home, and not to be gross but i wanted to puke up all the meds i was given, but if i did i would have to go back and do more test and such so i have been drinking bottles of water since the accident. i have gym again tomorrow but i am sitting out, the guy said he would to because he hurt his ankle again, lol. I think he is doing it because he feels bad. but i go in on next friday to get a pap test and probably have to go again with in another week of that. This sucks so much, in a way i was kinda happy though to know that i am not going to miss out on a whole lot and i am defiantly taking your advise and not having kids anytime soon.

I am so sorry for your loss today Habourchick07. I can't begin to imagine what you are going through. That is also my biggest fear. How far along were you? My heart goes out to you:(

To everyone else I am feeling a little better today. I didn't call telecare yet. I thought I would just wait a little bit and see how I am. The fever is gone so now it is just a REALLY bad cold. I was just worried something would happen to the baby.

Thank you to everyone that cared so much. Your replies were wonderful.

i was about 10-13 weeks. And yeah it is crappy. But the guy who did it wasnt a total ass about it :o he was really very sweet, he told me that i better be in school tomorrow lol so he can talk to me, and he doesnt want my grades to slip lol he was only joking though. i was called to babysit earlier and i told her what happened and she said i didnt have to come, but i decided to anyway the kids are really good and the girl i babysit for told them not to jump around as i was feeling crappy...She's gone through the same thing so she had it all prepared out when i got here lol movies, ice cream, etc. i have been just watching tv though and sitting on her couch..oh the joys of a lab top lol. i will keep you all posted for a while :)thanks to all of you for all the support, and for Elizabeth i think i might go to school tomorrow just to see how the guy is lol. lots of love guys
