Our gov is far from perfect, but all those liberties and freedoms we enjoy cost money. No one wants to hand over their hard earned dollars, but it is a fact of our society. There are a lot of places in the World where the government controls everything and everyone. I'd have to say we live in one of the best countries in the World and when we think it's so bad, what exactly are we comparing it too?

It would be great if they actually spent our tax dollars properly without the huge amount of waste and patronage (read theft)

Well, one of the jobs of the legislature is to oversee the operation of those in government; making sure that the agenda of the government is the agenda of citizens.

The other two roles of the legislature is to debate and enact laws, and operate as a check on the government since only the legislature can enact laws.

Also remember that the legislature is NOT the government, it is a separate entity.
