This morning on Westmorland Avenue, your little silver compact car passed a group of vehicles stopped at a crosswalk. The reason that we were stopped was that the crossing guard was escorting children across the road. Good thing your brakes were working properly otherwise you would have seriously hurt or killed 2 children and an adult.

But don't let that bother you, I got your license plate number and had a nice chat with the local police department and they are very interested in speaking with you....wonder how you will explain how you passed vehicles in a no passing zone and how you almost caused a catastrophic accident...all because you may have been a few minutes late for work.

Have a nice day and kiss your behind sweetly that you didn't injure or kill anyone today.

Ugh... I never understand why anyone is in a hurry. the only time there is reason to be is when you're going to the hospital. blah. I'm a really slow paced person.

Hmmm, they must have been rushing from the Millidge Avenue/Spar Cove Road area. They never stop for school busses there, can't imagine them stopping for children trying to cross at a marked cross walk?

What is wrong with people??

Yesterday we were almost hit when a chubby/plus size girl driving a white Blazer style SUV/Jeep barrelled past us as we crossed the road. The kids had just loaded onto the bus, the bus was parked, stop arm out, and the lights flashing. This woman, with long brownish hair in a pony tail, was yapping on her cell phone and the driver sounded his horn for about 30 seconds straight, and she did not even slow down or notice. She kept on speeding through.

I took the car description, her description, and the license plate number and emailed it to the police and the Department of Transportation for District 8.

Lets see if anything gets done..........

They keep telling me unless I can ID the driver, no charges can be laid. Well, I saw this woman point blank before she almost took my leg off!!!!

*SHAKING-HEAD*

People need to slow down, stop talking on their cell phones and PAY ATTENTION. You are driving a weapon, if you hit someone you may kill them! Does that not register with people??? And if you can't see the people or the EXTRA LARGE BRIGHT YELLOW/ORANGE SCHOOL BUS WITH RED FLASHING LIGHTS well you should not be driving.

In regards to the original post, sorry to go off topic, pedestrians have the right to cross the road. People need to watch for them.

I would sit there with a video camera and a paint ball gun. Might not be the best idea, but it'd relieve some stress, and I would laugh when they reported me.

I'm with you Mandi, I'll bring the snacks. Sounds like fun. I have a VERY hard time crossing the road where I live. I have almost been hit many times. Thank goodness they are finally putting crosswalk lights up.

LMAO..they don't care about that stuff. She is going on like the cops give a crap. I know 10 or so of the Traffic cops here in saint John Personally, as a matter of fact the head of traffic is a good friend of mine and unless they see it, nothing is going to happen, I could go out side right now get a lic plate # and call it in saying that he was speeding and almost ran over 10 people, they just brush it off, I think they were just humouring her.

Glad that you know 10 or so traffic cops, but you must be adding some from another jurisdiction because there are only 6 assigned to the traffic branch for the entire Saint John region. Others can make traffic stops but they are not part of the traffic division.

I have read the post and replies in this thread and I totally agree that people HAVE to slow down and get the off those cell phones ( which btw should be banned from being used in a vehicle while driving) .

But on the flip side of that page we as drivers also have a big complaint about pedestrians( excluding children) , how many of you have had a seriously close call of nearly hitting some dumb J-walking suddenly at the last sec when you're almost up to them walk out in front of you, then look at you as if you're from mars .

What , ya think we can stop on a dime just like that ???

But as for school zones one has to be on their toes and be alert, a child could appear out of nowhere in the drop of a hat.
And slooooow , drive slowly , respect the fact there are children loading and unloading from a school bus, kids are happy go lucky lil creatures .

Perhaps the lady in the white SUV has read yours and all posts and gives her head a shake , maybe she has kids and gives her reckless driving a second look. Could've been her child/children that had the near miss of being killed .

People like that and some pedestrians ( and u know who u r ) need a reality check.

I do take a lot of caution in school areas but sometimes other drivers take the cake...
one night I was proceeding along Loch lomond Road at a normal pace when all of a sudden I had to slam on my brakes and veer into someone's driveway because the car in front of me spied a boy STANDING on the sidewalk on the other side with his bike, not at a crosswalk and felt the need to stop to let him cross. I saw him as I was coming along and didn't see him as a danger or a pedestrian- the boy was waiting, he wasn't moving, for all the world looking like he was waiting for someone to come out of the house behind him, but this person thought they would set the pace for ALL the cars behind and come to a screeching halt. I couldn't imagine why she was stopping. The traffic on the opposite side nearest the boy didn't feel the need to stop and let him go for a while either, so we all got to sit there and wait. The moral of the story is, if you are going to make the effort to do your good deed of the day and let someone out of a side street or JAYWALK, make sure that the cars behind you are prepared for your "generosity" by slowing down in advance of the area. The other day I was going down Douglas Ave after school and up ahead beyond the stop sign I saw a City transit bus and a school bus. I could tell that the school bus was about to stop, yellow lighs flashing, so I stayed stopped at the stop sign, no point in proceeding through it if I could only go about 10 feet beyond Bentley st. But I'm sure some others would have crowded right up and blocked access from Bentley if they had been in my spot.

I also love the pedestrians who stand on the corner craning their necks, perusing the stars, looking at buildings to their left, then suddenly dart to their right.

10 or so? Our force must have grown all of a sudden. If you were 'great' friend with any of our City's finest I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be bad-mouthing them like this. Why don't you do the job for a while?

They will sometimes follow up with a phone call to the person IF they can find a phone # for them. But all they can do is give a friendly warning. Either they need to SEE it, or pick up the bodies as a result of it in order to do anything.

It's a safe guard in a way. If I had a grudge against you I could call them and say I saw you pass a school bus with it's lights flashing just to get you in trouble. Maybe you were at home taking a shower. Then they come to your door and arrest or fine you.

It's understandable in that way. But it's unfortunate. I think if enough people wittiness it and call they can do something. But one person could just be a trouble maker.

Whether he was humoring me or not, the constable that I spoke to told me he was going to contact the driver. He also told me that they have gotten a few calls already. When the driver did stop, the crossing guard walked up to the front of the car and stood looking directly at the driver for a few minutes. He could identify the driver, I was only able to get the plate number.

If the constable contacts the driver or not was not the point of this...it was telling of an incident that was potentially life altering for a lot of people...all for speeding to gain a few extra minutes.

Oh and for Brokenbumper, a friend of mine who is a Sergeant with a police force sent this to me, and since it is very popular with the police force all the officers that you know have probably already shared it with you:

I am a COP

Mr. Citizen, it seems you've figured me out. I fit neatly into the category where you've placed me. I'm stereotyped, standardized, characterized, classified, grouped, and always typical. Unfortunately, the reverse is true. I can never figure you out.

From birth, you teach your children that I'm the bogeyman and then you're shocked when they identify/associate with my traditional enemy.... the criminal! You accuse me of coddling criminals.... until I catch your kids doing wrong.

You may take an hour for lunch and several coffee breaks each day, but point me out as a loafer for having one cup.

You pride yourself on your manners, but think nothing of disrupting my meals with your troubles.

You raise Cain with the guy who cuts you off in traffic, but let me catch you doing the same thing and I'm picking on you. You know all the traffic laws.... but you've never gotten a single ticket you deserve.

You shout "FOUL" if you observe me driving fast to a call, but raise the roof if I take more than ten seconds to respond to your complaint. You call it part of my job if someone strikes me, but call it police brutality if I strike back.

You wouldn't think of telling your dentist how to pull a tooth or your doctor how to take out an appendix, yet you are always willing to give me pointers on the law.

You talk to me in a manner that would get you a bloody nose from anyone else, but expect me to take it without batting an eye. You yell that something's got to be done to fight crime, but you can't be bothered to get involved.

You have no use for me at all, but of course it's OK if I change a flat for your wife, deliver your child in the back of the patrol car, or perhaps save your son's life with mouth to mouth breathing, or work many hours overtime looking for your lost daughter.

So Mr. Citizen, you can stand there on your soapbox and rant and rave about the way I do my work, calling me every name in the book, but never stop to think that your property, family, or maybe even your life depends on me or one of my buddies.

Yes, Mr. Citizen, it's me the cop!

The Author of this article was Trooper Mitchell Brown of the Virginia State Police. He was killed in the line of duty two months after writing the article.

A few years ago a girl cut us off and nearly caused what could have been a horrible accident.
I went right to the Police Department and gave them her license plate number.
They went to her house and basically told her to smarten up with her driving.
They then called me back and explained that she was fairly young and a new driver and that her parents gave her heck for it.
It was nice of them to do a follow up call with me to let me know that they weren't just blowing smoke and that they took it serious.
And I agree with you LQQK about some pedestrians! Drives me crazy!!!!

eta: Way to go ruby for putting that in! It is so very true!!!

I really liked reading that ruby, really makes you think.

I do not drive and I only cross at crosswalks because I am terrified of being hit. I have crossed where lights are and people almost have hit me. Also I really hate it when drivers only slow down and do not come to a complete stop and then you have to run across the road. Just because I do not drive does not mean I do not have a right to transportation on foot. I know I do not need a reality check, but some drivers do.

If I had it my way I would only cross where there are lights. I live in a an area with busy streets and it can be scary sometimes. Especially when I have my babies in their double stroller.

Very nice of you to share that article, Ruby. It speaks so many truths. :)

I know we're not supposed to diss other members, but such ignorance to what our city's finest do every day is very infuriating.
