From what I understand it's illegal to employ a teen under the age of 15 and at 15 you need parental permission. What about babysitting?

I already called the labour board and it is 14 with parental consent. She's been babysitting over 2 yrs now but it doesn't pay much, its occasional.

Yes, I have been waited on by people at Walmart and Zellers east that I couldnt believe were even 14, one guy looked 12. I was helped by another guy who looked 14 or 15 and believe me, he gave better service than most of the 30 and 40 year old employees in most department stores.

I think Tim Horton's is a great first job.....at least the ones my son works at. They are more than happy to work around his school and football and things like that. He always has his own money in his pocket from his tips also.
He's been there well over a year now and really enjoys it. And he was only 15 when he started . I know it's not for everyone though so........

Thanks for posting the informative thread...
I was wondering the same thing for my oldest boy who is now 15 and expressed interest in a job soon.
Holy cow though, it's 'want, want, want' at that age.

mostly anywheres fast. Maybe wal-mart tim hortons wendys the movies places like that would be hiring. and if you pass out a resume and they dont call back call them and they would usually set up a appt. A job interview, just make sure she has her birth cert and social ins card. And she might need your permission to work.

if she is going into grade 11 or 12 in the fall, the District 8 School board has a youth apprenticeship program, all sorts of companies participate from Irving to Tim Hortons to hotels, gardening places, etc.

http://www.district8.nbed.nb.ca/ and go to the link on Youth Apprenticeship.

My daughter passed out about a dozen resumes to fast food places and got 2 calls for interviews the very next day. She's been working for over a month now and people are still calling from the other places for interviews. This is definately the time to be looking. It was allot easier then we thought.

My son went out on Monday that just passed, he handed out 3 resumes. He was called the next day by tim Horton's, interviewed on Wednesday and hired within the hour. When he got home Kentucky Fried Chicken was calling him for an interview. He declined the second, but it just goes to show there are jobs out there. He just turned 15 in May. He does have a social insurance card.

Youth Apprenticeship is a really good program. It's one summer of work now, but some places hire you back for a second year.
It's a lot of work though, you go to workshops on days off of school, you need to get CPR certified, go to a week of workshops after school ends, write essays, etc. But it goes by pretty fast, looks great on a resume and you can get really, really good paying jobs through the program, jobs that they usually would not consider students for.
